How Good Music Is Kept Off the Radio

I don't know if this is still the case but about 20 years ago I was listening to a country station while driving and the deejay said that he'd recently heard the best country music he'd ever heard in his life ... he said it was this hippy guy named Gram Parsons and he had Emmylou Harris singing with him ... but he wasn't allowed to play anything from the record which he now owned a copy of ... because it wasn't on the station's prescribed playlist ... he would be fined $25 for playing something he wasn't supposed to play. This deejay died a few years later and when the anniversary of his birth came around one of his fellow deejays said he was going to play his former associate's favourite song and pay the fine ... it wasn't Parsons but rather Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers doing a song called "Midnight Choir" which included the line: "Do they have Mogen David in Heaven, sweet Jesus, if not who the Hell wants to go." Tonight I'm listening to Parsons with his band the Flying Burrito Brothers. And it reminded me of this little story.

I listen to Sirius Sattellite radio and they feature some great indie unsigned bands. My favorite station is the CBC music station. Great music comming out of canada. And there is a band called "Telescreen" from winston/salem nc who have come up with an extremely novel way of marketing their music. (Users who buy the digital album, and get others to purchase the music are actually payed by the band and it's not just a percentage either. They get the whole cost of the 5.99 download. They also contribute proceeds to help people being sued by the RIAA.

They are one of my favorite up and coming bands. The songs are amazing, and even cooler: The musicians produced/engineered/mixed/and mastered the songs by themselves, and it sounds incredible.

CBC is what I mainly listen to when I listen to the radio. They really do give new acts a break ... I suspect one of their secrets is NO advertising ... so nobody is telling them what to do. Nowadays with record stores disappearing, new acts need all the public exposure they can get. I've heard about Sirius but haven't got around to checking it out yet.

I try to catch DNTO (Definitely Not The Opera) as often as possible ... they had a really good live Blue Rodeo concert on there last summer ... have you seen host Sook Yin Lee's movie yet (Shortbus)?

She's got a fairly major part in it.
It's about a sex club.
I haven't seen it ... yet.
But I saw some previews
and it's quite over the top.

I might have to check that out. Funny, I used to find Sook Yin Lee a bit annoying as a VJ on Much Music but then started liking her all of a sudden once she took over Nora Young's spot on DNTO.

It's a very graphic film. I mean the actors actually perform penetration in the sex scenes, but despite all the notoriety it's received from the graphic sex in the film, it's a very funny, and extremely touching films, and all the sex included in the film is integral to the plot. John Cameron Mitchell developed the story along with the Actors, and they've made a beautiful interesting film. It's not over the top at all. Sook Yin Lee is a wonderful actress And I hope to see a lot more of her in upcoming films. In fact, I'm so convinced of her ability that once I come out of retirement, I'll actively be dropping her name to casting directors in charge of whatever projects I may be involved in developing.
