Part Two: Flight 175

Flight 11 has already hit the North tower. F-15’s have been scrambled. The hijacking of Flight 175 is just about to be discovered.

It’s 20 minutes after NORAD was alerted about the first hijacking. NEADS ops commander Lt Colonel Kevin Nasypany makes a joke about the military exercises which were being held that day. Clearly at this point they know that the Flight 11 hijacking was real.

Just at that moment, in one of the dark, U-shaped air-traffic-control areas at New York Center, on Long Island, a half-dozen civilian controllers are watching a second plane that's turned off course: United 175, also scheduled from Boston to Los Angeles.

Information now comes in about Flight 175:

It’s way too late though, just as they find out Flight 175 hits the South tower. ZERO advance warning. There is mass confusion as one would expect considering the unusual circumstances. There's seemingly enough commotion in the Battle Cab that Nasypany needs to clarify: "Our fighters … " The two F-15s, scrambled from Otis, are now approaching the city.

In the background, several troops can be heard trying to make sense of what's happening.

—I think this is a damn input, to be honest.

The Vanity Fair author comments on the “damn input” line. It would have to be extremely wishful thinking since they have seen Flight 175 hit WTC 2 and can see both towers on fire.

Summary

NORAD has no advance warning whatsoever about Flight 175 being hijacked
They know it is not part of any military exercise as they have seen the second crash on television.
The F-15’s which were scrambled from Otis are now approaching NYC
All of this has happened within about 25 minutes of first being notified of any problem.
