What If...

The "live anywhere for a year" thread got me thinking.

Suppose you were sent on a spaceflight to anoher solar system. Now I'm assuming it'd be a hell of a lot slower than the speed of light, so we'll asume it's either close enough you can live to see the destination or you're crygenically frozen then awakened at the end. [addendum] There's planets in this solar system, but none you could come close to living on.

As you'd expect your ship receives constant updates from mission control as well as news. So, while exploring this new solar system, one day your latest batch of news from home includes the fact that it's all gone to hell. War- or whatever other global disaster, is destroying human civilization. That this will be the last transmission. The mission control guys go through the usual platitudes of how sorry they are you won't be returning home, or that if you did you'd be the only human left on Earth etc. etc.

Whatever...

That's the last transmission and, for all intensive purposes, you're the sole surviving member of your species many, possibly scores of lightyears away from anything habitable, much less your believed Earth.

What do you do after that?

Get on to the business of repopulating the species with the female crew members ASAP.

Okay, I think I should clarify that the solar system you're in has planets but none you could live on and while the ship's big and advanced enough to sustain people for long periods, it's like like Red Dwarf.

Well, quite honestly I would:

1. Freak right the fuck out.
2. Continue to freak right the fuck out.
3. Stop freaking right the fuck out.
4. Change my "space underwear"
5. Float endlessly in the void of space beyond comprehension and hope for the best.

First I'd throw up just from the take off, then I'd throw up looking out the window, then I would throw up from the smell emmitting from Comic's underwear! Sorry Cos, I just couldn't resist saying it.

Go back to earth and ask the head ape for a job. He can't be worse than Cheney.

Please don't insult the wonderful apes by refering to that trader as an ape. Apes are smarter by far.

Ground Control to Major Tom
Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you....

"Here am I floating round my tin can
Far above the Moon
Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do."

I had a boating accident in 1996..July 27 to be exact, where my boat was taking on water and rolled over and sank..and just before I abandoned ship, I thought to myself.."So this is how it all ends"..Alot of thoughts go through your head in a short time..You think of family..my daughter, my girlfriend at the time, and I really felt strongly that I wasnt ready to go, that I had so much more living to do..But this is a bit different than the question that this thread asks, in that, I had a chance for survival, whereas being stranded out in space is final..I would in that case probably go through alot of the same mental and emotional gymnastics, go through numerous scenarios in my mind..and then hopefully accept my fate, and hope its over soon
