Thanks for the well wishes and info guys!

I'm not sure if his anemia will be an ongoing problem or if it will clear up after they remove the mass. Casey (my other dog) just woke us up and I'm not sure if I will be able to go to sleep again. Sam kept maybe a 1/4 to 1/2 ounce of plain chicken down but Malky and I think he may just not have room in his tummy. I applied an ace bandage after reading Mom's link because his white gums were just freaking me out. Although he's weak, he still wags his tail and is responsive. Right now, Sam's gums are even a little bit pink!

I'll update again after lunchtime.

Best wishes for your baby. They're so dependent on their people, and it's so hard to watch them suffer. (((((Sam)))))

Smile I get to bring him home!

I was able to get Sam worked in at a new vet's this morning and they didn't do an ultrasound prior, since it was obvious the mass needed to come out. The vet tech called me at 12:10 today and told me that after they opened Sam up, they discovered the mass was attached to his liver. She also said it was more "involved" than originally expected and asked what I wanted to do. After asking if it could be removed anyway, I was told they possibly could lose him on the operating table. So I fought back the tears while she told me I could take a few minutes and call her back. When I got off the phone, I let my tears flow, since they had told me yesterday that if it involved the liver it was a bad sign. After I was comprehensible, I called back and told her that they could close him back up and I would be there this afternoon to euthanize him. She told me that in the meantime, the doctor discovered it may be better to take the mass out and that he wanted to try. Well, the doctor just called a little bit ago - Sam's sitting up and looking around, didn't even need a blood transfusion today! The doctor said he wouldn't put Sam down today and I agreed! He has some medicine he'll need to take and the doctor will tell me more about his post-op recovery when I get there. So I get to pick Sam up in an hour or so.

My best to you and Sam - poor sweet thing! I've been through what you guys are going through; it's the hardest thing. We love them for as long as we can and minimize their discomfort where we can...

Enjoy every moment with him.

Farra, good news!! It sure sounds like you and Sam will be together for awhile longer. Bless his sweet little heart - he just wasn't ready to cross the rainbow bridge yet.

Much love to you both.

Thanks everyone! I have no guarantees on my time with him but the vet said the lobe removed wasn't working before, so hopefully his liver will work better now. If all goes well, he'll only have about 14 days of meds to recovery.
