fortunately for me, she doesnt do diamonds. in fact there is absolutely no jewellry in her apartment, except some handmade pieces she brought from home. she is not into "stuff"

it makes it harder. i am used to people always wanting more, more, more.
but luckily, i finally figured it out. just have to venture out and pick it up

jewelry. jewelry. jewelry.

(jewelry, in case you didn't get the hint.)

maybe it's just me, and maybe i only feel this way because for some strange reason the people in my family have never been great jewelry givers... they give "practical" gifts.... drill presses, saws, clamps, (which i really DO like) bags of screws and nails, small appliances, and clothes that i wouldn't be caught dead in.

even a thoroughly liberated woman with a terrific wood shop loves shiney objects. and to me, even if it's supposedly cliche' - nothing has more sentimental value than jewelry. all you have to do is make sure you get something in a similar "style" to things she already wears. (for example - don't get something "frilly" if the jewelry she wears is modern, or vice versa.)

i FINALLY decided to buck family trends, and ignore the wish lists for duct tape and mortar mix - and started buying one really nice piece of jewelry for my mom each year. she reacts like an excited child and wears them all the time!

i am sure with my girlfriend, it wouldnt work. she is the most practical person i know. her childhood was poor, and now she doesnt care about that stuff.

i settled on her favourite childhood cartoon dvd set and a whack of art supplies and easel. she did a lot of art back home, and constantly talks about wanting to do it again, but has no time or supplies here
i figure if i get her the stuff, she will make time for her hobby

well, diamonds aren't the ONLY kind of jewelry. in fact, diamonds are kind of a turn off to some women... women like that like more natural stones and one of a kind handmade jewelry. check out lapidaries in your area for really neat, one of kind pieces in unusual stones.

but i didn't see your latest post because i was distracted by a phone call till after i replied about jewelry.

so if jewelry is definitely out, how bout a certificate for a day spa! hot stone massage, mud wraps, etc.
