High Def DVD question

This may be a dumb question but I have no idea. Can you watch High Def DVDs if your TV has HD capability or do you have to subscribe to HD TV thru your cable company to watch HD? I finally bought a TV with HD, but don't subscribe to the HD channels and want to make sure I buy the right type of DVD movie.

You have to have a high def DVD player and buy high def movies to play in it. There are currently two different types of players for this, one is called Bluray and the other is a High Definition player. However, I would warn about getting one or the other because it's just like the VHS vs Beta war way back when. Certain movie companies release them exclusively for one or the other and at the cost of around $500 it's just not worth taking the chance IMO. I am waiting to see which one becomes the standard.

Ah, thanks! That makes sense. On the news yesterday I heard bits and pieces about the Blueray and HD players but didn't catch it all but they did say to go with BlueRay if you're heading in this direction and there is a bigger selection of DVDs. Well I guess I can't buy HD DVDs then, my player is old.

Wink

If you want HD channels thru your cable company the experts say most people are not happy and return the sets if they do not understand they have to use the cable HD chanels so if you want to get the most out of your HD TV subscribe to the HD channels.

Wait to buy one. Prices are falling by the minute. Besides there's only a dozen HD discs and either BlueRay or HD-DVD will soon be obsolete. It's the Beta vs. VHS fight all over again.
They were $1000 a couple of months ago and they're $188 now.

HD programming, esp. football, hockey, movies are really great. You will notice right away where your money went when you subscribe.

- I have a PS3 and several blueray movies - + they look absolutely AWESOME.

Which means I still need a HD player to enjoy the DVDs. Thanks all for the info. I will definitely wait to see the prices come down.
