I did this once, I was at the Portland Audubon wildlife center to get photos of birds and grabbed this shot, when I saw them so interested in the bird it just seemed like it would be a good photo. The audubon society asked me if they could use it in their brochure and I gave it to them. I did feel a little weird about it though.

That is a really cool shot. I dabble a bit with photography but I like to ask permission first. It does take away from being a candid or natural shot so maybe after you have taken it, go up to the person and show it to them and ask if it's ok, if they say no, then delete. Sort of what White Rabbit suggested.

I do like this shot a lot - but I'm not sure I would be happy to know it's up on the web without my knowledge or permission if it were me!

So, get out of the shot?

Or just say, "I'd rather not have my picture taken"?

One of those are bound to work.

It sounds like you were, indeed, asked for your permission.

I didn't actually say yes
Did you actually say "no"?

and made it clear that I wasn't really happy about that.
When, after the fact?

I'm thinking of sending an email asking how and where those pics are going to be used because I don't want them on the web - especially if they come up in search engine results.
Your company may very well respect your wish.

I sent the email off this morning and I just a reply. They're totally cool with that (and I knew they would be). I was just wondering if I was being neurotic/anal about the whole thing. I'll have to think twice about posting stuff like this on this board though, some people take it way to seriously or get interrogative.

Legally speaking, a signed release form is required. I modeled a bit in my youth despite my utter disdain for being photographed.

I dislike having my photo taken without my consent. I grew up in a tourist town, so I am, begrudgingly, on many hours of Japanese tourist footage. I would never photograph a total stranger without their consent.

My folks got a video camera and my mother, who knows nothing of photography, insisted on filming our Thanksgiving dinner. The camera was placed 4 feet from my right-side putting me in the foreground while I was eating. I protested profusely. To make matters worse, I was forced to watch it. I HATE that shit!

I know many professional photographers. We have an unwritten understanding. They know good shots from bad shots. If it's a bad shot, it gets tossed. If it's a good shot, and they wish to publish it, they ask first.

p.s. nice shot
