How does your garden grow?

So, what do you like to grow? Flowers...herbs...veggies...bulbs? (Other?) I dabble in a wide variety. Brugmansia (Angel Trumpet), herbs, Old English roses, hummingbird plants, pears, jasmine, and a lot more.

I love growing stuff!

I would like to grow mint. Anyone know if this is possible in pots without much sunlight?

I have potted plants that are mostly green foiliage - nothing ever blooms because of lack of sunlight.

On the winter gardening for pots. I just can't get into pansies. They're so dull and they're not tall. What about those mums, is it mums that I keep seeing everywhere? How long do they last? Is there anything I can put in my big pots by my front steps that will survive freezing temps? I mean, it doesn't generally get much below say, 20s at night here.

You're in luck! Mint is happiest in partial shade and in moist, moderately rich, slightly acid soil, but it will grow in any light from full sun to full shade. Just choose a good quality potting soil. The trick is to keep it moist but not over water.

You usually see Mums in Fall, but they're pretty hardy plants. I don't have a lot of experience with them myself. I doubt they'll take freezing temps. Have you considered going evergreen? (Like Juniper maybe?) It doesn't flower, but it takes extreme cold like a work horse.

Awesome, thanks! So would I buy just buy a mint plant and pot that? When I want to use some, do I just cut how much I want or would I take the whole root? Will more grow back into it's place?

Oh, I like that:

I'll have to see if I can find some juniper! They're nice and tall, and I think that would look good! Thanks!

Yeppers, just buy the plant and use a 12" pot. Just pinch off what you need. Mint is prolific, so it's hard to hurt it. Btw, in warmer months be careful setting the pot out on the ground. It can spread through the root area by rhizomes, and it can become a nucance [sic?] plant.

And I just thought of another choice that's going to sound a tad weird. Rosemary. It is very hardy, smells wonderful, and it can be "shaped" by pruning. Just this week I saw a Rosemary Christmas tree! It was so cute...about 2' high. It's also a pretty green, and oldtimers always planted it by the entranceway to ward off evil.
