Thanks Mark. Boy, am I feeling lucky right now. My Ball Python figured out how to jimmy the keyed lock on his cage and escaped! I forgot to check on him yesterday, so I didn't notice he was gone until a few minutes ago. (I looked up at the open beam rafters in that great room and saw two of my cats up on the beams! They were freaked OUT.)
The fuse panel in the wall located behind his cage doesn't "seat" well, and it was pushed ajar, so I thought he'd gone into the wall and possibly outside. (That would be a death sentence with the winter here.) I looked all over, no Monty. I still don't know how he did this, but I found him in the next room behind a locked door? ![]() Man, this one I would have gone psycho over. My squad back home (Fl) found him in the street, and my Cpl. brought him to me because Monty was trying to die from a deep gash on his abdomen. I kept him inside my jacket to keep him warm with my body heat, and I hauled ass to my vet at 6am when I got off duty. It wound up with surgery and the vet had to treat 3 seperate infections he'd acquired, but he made it. He's been my wubby ever since. He really is the nicest snake I've ever handled....very gentle. I am a lucky woman. he's back in his cage eating thawed rat as I type. |

Glad you found your snake! Even though I can't imagine having one as a pet, that would be so upsetting...and unsettling. Can you really make friends with them?
And I'm so sorry about Bailey. My bigdog said goodbye to us after 13 years in June (he was 14, we got him when he was just over a year old) and I'm still not even close to over it. I keep finding my shoes where I left them and even though his carting of shoes and anything else you might be looking for annoyed me to no end, I really miss it. Such a good boy. |

Kaycee, I had no idea. I am so sorry about your loss. It's tough when they've been part of the family for so long.
People say snakes can't tell one person from another, and to that I say BS. My snakes know me, and I can handle them when DH can't...like when they're shedding. I'm not saying they "know me", but perhaps my heat signature? ![]() |

Thanks, Gonzo. It happened pretty quickly, which, I hate to say, maybe made it a little easier, but I agree, after so long it's really tough. He was the first dog I ever had as my own, as an adult. It'll take some time. He was one of my bestest buds.
On snakes, though...is there a way to get rid of them if they're unwanted? My Mom has a snake in her house and an exterminator coming tomorrow to spray something, but this is the second one she's had in as many years and they seem to be able to get everywhere! Vents...it's like something out of a Harry Potter movie. Any magic remedies? I don't think she's slept in a few days and I'm semi-housesitting in a couple of weeks and would LOVE to be sure that the critter has left the building! EDIT: I don't want to kill it, I just want it out of her house. Last edited by kaycee; 08-18-2008 at 10:32 PM. Reason: explained in the post |

I am far enough away from home right now that it's not feesable to go back and forth. I miss Sequoia more than my own bed.....she sleeps next to me with her head on my pillow at night untill she gets hot then wanders off...usualy under the bed on my side.
One of the ladies at the facility had a visit from her dog. Her two kids brought him by. I was outside when they got there and the poor dog could already smell his human all the way outside and was straining the leash to get inside the building it had never been to. When I came in he was up on he lap by the nurses station with his tail going a mile a minute. I could not honestly tell you who was happier to see who! |

Spray something? Omg, be careful...he sounds like an idiot. No, there's nothing you can deter them with, BUT...
Some idiot put out a product called "Snake off" that contains the same ingredients as mothballs, and it is deadly to other animals like dogs and cats. I hope he's not that type of idiot. I used to run a large pest control firm in Fl when I was younger, and let me tell you there are some real dumbasses in that profession. You need to figure out how they're getting in at moms house. Are there perhaps plumbing pipes that have a bit of space around them? A screen that might have a hole? Most snakes only enter an area to seek warmth or darkness...to say, shed. They can't "see" like mammals. They "see" heat with sensors in their face. (I'm using human terms here to hold down confusion). I wish I was there. I'd catch it and release it. What state is she in? |

I bet it's the plumbing. She tapped into public water from her well a couple of years ago and that makes perfect sense! I'm going to call her in the morning and make sure she mentions it. THanks! |
