Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (?) 1911-2/5/08

The man responsible for introducing transcendental meditation to westernized cultures has passed on. He'll be remembered by most for his role as The Beatles' guru, but those who have learned the techniques of TM, and have benefited from the enlightenment and positive changes attributed to meditation will remember him as an inspirational human being.

Beatles guru Maharishi Yogi is dead

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, a guru to the Beatles who introduced the West to transcendental meditation, has died at his home in the Netherlands.
Once dismissed as hippie mysticism, the Hindu practice of mind control known as transcendental meditation gradually gained medical respectability.
"He died peacefully at about 7pm," said Bob Roth, a spokesman for the Transcendental Meditation movement that the Maharishi founded. He said his death appeared to be due to "natural causes, his age" - he was thought to be 91.
Maharishi began teaching TM in 1955 and brought the technique to the US in 1959. But the movement really took off after the Beatles attended one of his lectures in 1967 and visited his ashram in India in 1968, bringing along such famous friends as Mick Jagger and Donovan.
Once there, he had a famous falling out with the rock stars after rumours emerged that the Maharishi was making inappropriate advances on attendee Mia Farrow. John Lennon was so angry he wrote a bitter satire, Sexy Sadie, in which he vowed that the Maharishi would "get yours yet".
The Maharishi insisted he had done nothing wrong and years later Paul McCartney agreed with him. Deepak Chopra, a disciple of the Maharishi's and a friend of George Harrison's, has disputed the Farrow story, saying instead that the Maharishi had become unhappy with the Beatles because they were using drugs.
The Maharishi retreated last month into silence at his home in the Dutch town of Vlodrop on the grounds of a former Franciscan monastery close to the German border, saying he wanted to dedicate his remaining days to studying the ancient Indian texts that underpin his movement.
"He had been saying he had done what he set out to do," Mr Roth said.
With the help of celebrity endorsements, Maharishi - a Hindi-language title for Great Seer - parlayed his interpretations of ancient scripture into a multi-million global empire.
His roster of famous meditators ran from Mike Love of the Beach Boys to Clint Eastwood and Chopra.

Howard Stern was a follower of his. He did a 20 minute eulogy on him this morning.

I woke up to it this morning. It was an incredibly genuine and touching tribute to the Maharishi I really hope Artie Lange tries it out, or gets some sort of help to control his obesity, and problems with addiction. Howard and David Lynch are two of the most unlikely TM'ers I can think of. I learned the technique from my father and I only recently participated in mass meditation at the Santa Barbara Peace Palace. It's a great way to get relaxed, and like Howard said, TM really does benefit those who wish to quit smoking. I quit 8 years thanks to a hypnosis session, and meditating when I felt the urge to smoke. There are many resources available to those who want to learn the technique without having to sign up for instructional courses at a center.

Thus the song...

Another case of a good thing gone commercial. While there is major benefit from any type of meditation, it seems that any organized "teachings" eventually stray into that commercial abyss.

We have a Syda meditation ashram in our county, that ultimately contributed to the demise of a town. That, because they convinced their followers to donate their properties to the ashram, in an attempt to rid themselves of all worldly possessions.

This, and their ability to buy everything else with their unlimited resources. Many uptight NYC types would come up to the mountains for a weekend of sleeping on the floor, eating beansprouts, and intensive chanting. This, for the bargain price of about $3000.00.

They did, however, return to the ratrace with a new sense of calm.

All of these properties came off the tax rolls, so the remaining residents have property taxes that run upwards of $500.00/$1000.00 per MONTH!

The Guru grew bored with the region, and returned to California. Now, the ashram is selling off these properties, to the Hasidic community, which will keep the properties tax exempt.

Om Guru Om
