Just bought a 2008 Saturn Vue
Got sick of dumping gas money into my 2500 Chevy HD, with my new job (print industry).
I was hoping to keep it for side jobs and such, but that hasn't materialized. The Vue is less gas, less money, less insurance, and I might turn it over in less then a year any way. I just needed to walk onto a lot and get another vehicle . They were quick concise and no pressure. The Vue isn't a bad vehicle and my truck was getting old (2005). I kind of knew what I was in the market for, something with a hatchback for small side jobs for my hand tools and a saw or two, and not too small. Just incase something small comes up that I can make a few extra dollars at. They came in at the financing I wanted. So I bought it. I probably should have walked onto a few other lots, might have saved me $20 a month, but fuck it. When you go from a 2500 series pick up to one of these crossovers, there really isn't any single one that's going to stand out better then the others. They're all going to seem the same, small, less tough, with no balls. They couldn't really believe how nonchalant I was about buying a new vehicle. But it's just transportation. I bought this last truck over the phone. I knew exactly what I wanted and I had a guy on the "inside" at the Chevy dealership. I really didn't want to spend more then a single morning scouring the area for what is essentially the same genre of vehicle with a different brand name slapped on it. Honda, Kia, Toyota.........what ever, it aint a truck and that makes it the same to me. My free time is worth more then some minuscule savings or supposedly better "value". Until it's a Ferrari, or something fabulous, it's just transportation within my budget and some quick research. Plus the dealership is right around the corner from my house. I think it's silver, I forget which color was available in the options that fit my budgetary demands. . ![]() |

It will probably be cool till I rearrange a few things and get into something less "baseline".
I'm kind of transitioning now with the new job, took a hit in pay and so forth. It's actually got almost all the options other then the top tier stuff. They don't have "stripped" versions on the lots anymore. So it's not totally "crappy". It's actually has lot more amenities then my truck since with that vehicle I put all the money into the work aspects of it. Stainless steel exhaust, heavy duty radiator, tow package, extra leaf springs, tranny cooler, dual batteries...etc etc. My truck interior is AM/FM AC cloth, with RubberMaid floors. But all the shit cost way more then this little Saturn and all it's "gadgets". They do it because they know your making money with a truck. But since I can't on any regular basis pass down those costs to customers (gas included) anymore, I had to ditch it. Gonna be nice to listen to CD's instead of talk radio or the oldies. What's going to suck is not being able to run over pot holes with no fear. This is my first "car" in probably 15 years. |

I'll vouch for that. I went from an Acura MDX (the SUV) to a 2006 Prius. Way different feel !

I hope so, we'll find out. And even if it sucks it's all under warranty anyway. ;-).
It was between these vehicles: Dodge Caliber Toyota Yaris Nissan Rogue Honda Element (too ugly even for me) Chevy doesn't even offer anything in a "crossover". Kia had some low prices but everything was a sub-compact, and my budget exceeded their choices. For one morning's research and 2 hours in a dealership I'm happy. Even if I could have shaved a few dollars a month I wasn't about to spend the whole weekend doing it, by looking and looking and driving and driving. What's done is done. |

It's the whole gas thing. It sucks(ed) now with the 2500, but what if it got worse? We're not poor, but it was definitely a consideration that's how uncertain the feelings are for us about the "future" of things in this country and it's energy problems. Otherwise I might have bought one of those "mini-trucks". Anyway.......thanks for not telling me I'm an idiot for getting up one morning and buying a new vehicle in about 4 hours. |

I've got an 05 Ram 2500. I bought it new, below cost...Dad's employee discount. I was forced to get the 3/4 ton, as the bastards wouldn't build me a 1/2 ton w/a standard tranny back then. It's a nice truck, nicely equipped. Rides a little like a pig, and the hemi gives me 15mpg, only if I behave...which means I get around 12. I too decided a few years ago to buy a car, to alleviate the gas bill, and to keep the miles off the truck. I got a very used VW Jetta for a couple of grand. 35 mpg, but I hadn't been in a car...let alone a tunafish can, in decades. Wierd feeling. I made some money this past winter, and it was time to get rid of the old Jetta. I did virtually the same as you...checked prices on line, and went and bought the new Jetta a day or two later. The manager wasn't too happy w/me, cause I got it for less than he wanted to sell it for. Same deal...they don't even build the Jetta stripped anymore. Nice car...no options added. Killer stereo...does anything else matter? I can't do without the truck, though. I have considered trading it on a new 1/2 ton, but there are (rare) times when I need the extra suspension. I'll hold off on the truck, although I get them at below cost any time I want. This economy scares me, so I'll play it safe, for now. Enjoy the new ride.

It's funny with SUVs... It will take $120 to fill up a Suburban pretty soon, if not already. If you can buy a small used subcompact for $2,000, that's like 4 months worth of gas in a Chevy, if you fill up every week. Eventually, it'll be cheaper to buy a car at the gas station rather than filling up your truck.
