Tyler Perry makes the jump from comedy to... horror?
AP release: Having already taken the comedy world by storm, writer/director Tyler Perry is looking to expand his empire into the horror realm. “Making people laugh and providing those rays of light has been very rewarding, but now I’m focusing all of my energy into scaring the heck out of folks!” exclaimed Tyler Perry in a press conference this morning held to announce his upcoming horror slate beginning with a remake of John Carpenter’s They Live entitled Tyler Perry’s They Live.
After a successful run in theatre, Tyler Perry entered the film world with a bang in February of 2005 with Tyler Perry’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman, which grossed over $50 million theatrically. Perry followed that with a string of successful films including Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion, Tyler Perry’s Daddy’s Little Girls, and Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? Despite all the success in the comedy genre, Tyler Perry is ready for what’s next. And what’s next is R-Rated horror films. “I’m ready to spill some blood!” yelled Tyler Perry earlier this morning. But fret not, fans of Madea, Tyler Perry’s signature character---she’s coming along for the ride. “I can’t leave Madea behind, that would be like Shrek without Donkey.” Of his new career direction Tyler Perry added “You might not know it, but even my earlier work was inspired by the work of John Carpenter, The Exorcist, and Rosemary’s Baby…now I’m just going to let it come to the forefront.” On the upcoming horror slate, Tyler Perry has lined up the aforementioned remake of They Live, the original horror thriller Tyler Perry’s House of Pain (not to be confused with Tyler Perry’s TBS sitcom Tyler Perry’s House of Payne) and a remake of 2006’s The Grudge 2 entitled Tyler Perry’s The Grudge 2. Tyler Perry. Many of you might think this is a joke, but the truth of the matter is that it is.
