why should i tip?
ok this really pisses me off. couple weeks ago, we went to Tony Roma's. probably wont go again, at least not to that particular location.
the hostess took forever to seat us in an empty restaurant. the steak i got was 5 ounces of fat and 5 of actual meat. the waitress refilled our drinks after we asked twice. its not like she was busy, there were 4 other tables with customers, that's it. the food order was wrong and took forever to fix. then they expect a tip. why? my experience was horrible, why should they be rewarded? thats just stupid. i have heard the argument that servers get below minimum wage in the states, because its expected their tips will make up the difference. that is fucked up. they should be paid the minimum because its the law but up here, there is no such law. everyone gets at least $8.40 per hour. why should i supplement their income? if the service was incredible, i would be happy to tip. but it seems it has become a custom to tip and this is not a good thing. if customers always tip, there is no incentive for the server to do a good job. it should be a bonus for them going above and beyond. i can count on one hand the number of times i have had such service in a restaurant. what i hate even more is those damn cups by the cash register of coffee shops and fast food places. at the university here, there is one coffee shop with a tip cup labelled "support counter-intelligence." i dont really know what that means. am i helping them pay for school or taking away their motivation to go to school? there is another place that serves stir-fry called "Edo." 90% of the time when i go there, the guy at the counter is sleeping (im not kidding). he takes my order, yells it to the guy at the grill and for that he thinks he deserves my change? what the hell? cab drivers really piss me off too. i know it is a tough job and they dont get paid much with the price of gas and having to pay their company to use the car. life's rough. if a driver smiles and cheerfully puts my wheelchair in the trunk, in -30 weather, i am more than willing to give him a fat tip. but, as happened on monday, if he asks for my address twice and still takes me to the wrong place, why the fuck should he be entitled to a tip? a friend of mine from Korea said after being here for a couple years, he went back home for the summer. when he took a cab, he offered a tip to the driver, who actually go upset and said he didnt need charity. right on. thats how it should be. some people say if you dont tip in a restaurant, you may get "something extra" in your food the next time you go there. isnt that extortion? and isnt it illegal?

I tip according to attitude and service. I'm known at some places as a heavy tipper, but I get great service. (And those gals get way below min. wage). If I get an AH I don't tip.
Be careful with those cabbies Chris. One left my son laying by the side of the road out in the middle of nowhere. (He couldn't get in his chair alone.) I hunted that bastard, but I never found him. (It's a good thing, I guess.) |

Having worked in Restaurants I am very strict with my tipping. Waiters and waitresses do expect a tip no matter what. It is ridiculous. I will leave 15% if I get OK service and nothing goes wrong. I start going down from there depending on service, including checking back to the table after the meal is set and refilling water and beverage glasses, how well they handle requests for sides (dressing, mayo...etc).
If the service is outstanding and the server is friendly it doesn't matter how bad the food is because that is out of their hands unless you mention it to them so I tip 20% of more depending. But I agree, nearly everywhere people are looking for tips. Next thing you know there will be someone standing in front of your driveway with his hand out just for getting out of your way. |

Unless you want to open up your car to the pungent fumes of a trapped and cooking fart. Don't even get me started about hotels. There are people installed there who basically serve as roadblocks in the way of getting from the entrance to your lodgings, and I always give in, but I don't even like to carry around cash. I'm familiar with operating "a door" in fact I'm saying to fuck with modesty: I'm proficient in opening and closing, stepping and (sometimes spinning) in and out all the while carrying my own luggage. I'm a pretty talented individual when it comes to that. In fact I relish those instances in which the opportunity to show off my door operating and luggage carrying skills to those around me and resent having to pay the individual who just stole my thunder.

Well, they are some REALLY shitty people in this world, and I'm glad you haven't had to deal with 'em. Hell, this big hunky biker type walked up to my son seated in his wheelchair and punched him in the face several times before the clerk came running out of the store screaming "I'm calling 911!" My son didn't have the good sense NOT to remark to the guy's girlfriend that she was "fine".
Who punches a guy that doesn't even have use of his hands? No shortage of creeps taking up good air. |

after reading a thread on another board, i had a thought: someone on that board said you must take into account that a server may be having a bad day and tip them anyway. that is fucking ridiculous. going back the surgeon, if he had a bad day and accidentally cut my spinal cord, should he be excused?
