Petition aims to put a stop to Dr. Uwe Boll

Behind the facade of those vacant eyes and the kind of resume that would have had most filmmakers changing careers years ago, we knew there was a reasonable man hiding somewhere inside Uwe Boll. In a recent interview with the horror Web site FEARnet, the critic-boxing director of such celluloid atrocities as BloodRayne, In the Name of the King and Postal made a modest proposal for an early retirement we can all get behind:

FN: Are you aware that there is a petition online, signed by 18,000 people, requesting that you stop making movies?
UB: Yeah, I know that. 18,000 is not enough to convince me.

FN: How many would it take?

UB: One million. Now we have a new goal.

Naturally, the troops have mobilized around the Web: At the aforementioned petition, nearly 1,300 signatures have accrued in the 10 minutes it took to write this item, bringing the total to nearly 58,000 at press time. Considering that the average Boll film draws around 15,000 theatrical viewers, we don't imagine there are 1 million people in the world who would bother to be this offended by House of the Dead. However, you also can't turn off the lush bloom of fan democracy once it's on, so here's your pen. Do your duty.

STOP DR. UWE BOLL [PETITION ONLINE VIA VULTURE]

Is he responsible for The Hills Have Eyes?

If he is, I'll sign it. If not, I don't really know what to say. I might not be familiar with his work.

It won't work. Boll will keep making movies as long as the German government keeps giving a 100% tax write-off for film investors. His movies all lose money, but his investors basically get all that lost money back in tax write-offs. Because they have to pay tax on profits, the worst case scenario for them is for the films to break even. The films have to either do really well, or they have to totally bomb, and in the latter case, Uwe Boll delivers.

No, that was Alexandre Aja. Boll makes "horror" films that are just filled with mindless gun fights and car chases, such as House of the Dead and Alone in the Dark (those are the only two Boll films I've seen, and I didn't last until the end of the latter). He specialises in video game adaptations.

Well that doesn't make any sense....isn't their tax system marginal?

It doesn't make any sense. It's some rule they have to stimulate the German film making industry. Their investment is 100% deductible, so if the film doesn't make a euro, then the investors lose nothing. It's only when the film starts to make money that they have to pay taxes. If the film breaks even, then they have to pay taxes on the full amount of the budget, but they don't get any tax write-offs. This is why Germans invest in Uwe Boll's films. They invest in them precisely because they know they will tank.

I get that...but a loss is a loss...and if it loses money than they are only saving a percentage of that money...whatever the tax bracket happens to be....since the tax is only paid on each additional dollar its not like they are paying less total taxes than the total loss in money...
