Hey there! Lovely to see you.

So.....I take it these neighbors do this in the middle of the night?

Otherwise, you could just happen to bring your bags out when you see them.

I like your idea....

we have nicknamed this practice "taking the leaves for a ride" in honor of his Italian heritage.

It was a harmless joke...until the police surrounded him once after they discovered a body near by

he returned home safe and exonerated, but a little pale from his brush with the law...apparently the officers found his story a little difficult to believe..he had to produce his pile of leaves. Eventually they realized that he was decidely not a criminal, just cheap.

I can relate to you that upon learning of the tale... that my mother and I were in physical PAIN from laughing so hard...for days.
Omg, that IS funny!

We leave the leaves as they are & hope this is good for the ground. I don't like rakes.

My turn to bitch & ask advice. We have great recycling program (plastic, cans, glass, paper, cardboard, organic waste) and the reduction in actual garbage is amazing, even in our small household. Most residents participate, but our next door neighbours can't be bothered: irritating. Once in a while a garbage bag appears with ours: also irritating. They wouldn't keep going over the two-bag limit if they tried recycling, duh.

In the last couple of weeks, they've ignored the fact that we were at our own limit (I'm clearing the basement out), and put their shit with ours anyway. It wouldn't have been a major disaster had the city stuck to the rules & left the garbage as they usually do when people go over their limit, but holy ignoranus.

So... I'm wondering if I should call the city and ask them to drop a couple of bins off at their address. It'd be a discrete hint, better than going over there to tell them to stop putting their crap with ours. That's my last resort.

Bad idea? Good? So/so?

We've got a house like that across from us. One adult and three kids manage to overflow three large garbage cans every week. We are two adults and put out one bag every other week. I don't get it.
I think calling the city for your neighbors would be my first move. People manage to take things the wrong way too easily, so if you could solve it without 'telling' them.

As for leaving your leaves for the ground, it depends on what kind. Oak leaves act like a plastic cover, they'll kill everything under if not picked up. I learned that the hard way, there are still patches in the yard I'm trying to grow back.

Edit because I just thought of a funny Italian relative story. My aunt, typical Italian fashion she has to feed feed feed people. She would always bake a birthday cake for people she worked with, no matter what. One night things got late for some reason and to make a long story short, at 3:00am the police spotlighted her in her driveway as she's rolling her car back and forth over a bag of nuts she wanted to crush all at once.
She said it was late, she was trying to save time.

Am I glad you're actually speaking with me. I owe you a PM about this.

Yep, they do it in the wee hours of the morning, and they are really *good*: I'm usually up nights now, and I stay here in my mother's living room which faces the front yard. Sound carries when there isn't the white noise of the day. I've never heard or seen them. It's pretty awesome.

You understand completely. Years ago, we had trouble with neighbours who never got over my asking them if they could do their home improvement projects in the afternoon (VS seven AM - I kid you not), and after that, the female would get on my mother's case about strays we were feeding. She never showed up when I was here, nor would she answer the door if I went over to speak with her: easier to make an old woman cry than actually negotiate with a younger member of the household. I don't want to see something like that happen again.

We have a pear tree, and we have those patches.

Damn.

Can you imagine actually seeing someone do something that? Oh my god, I'd be rolling

So, here we are being all good about our yard waste, (and 15 lrg oaks can put out a lot of it), meanwhile all our neighbors are dumping theirs down the hill in our woods.

What are you supposed to do? Be a jerk and complain? They all do it and have been doing it for years before we bought the place. Its like a neighborhood tradition, they even scolded me for NOT doing it. What really bugs me is that the city will pick up the leaves and crap if you just pile them near the road in the fall. But the edge of the woods is closer.

We talked about maybe developing that land, you couldn't do much with it because of the steep hill and stream that floods the bottom, and we probably never will, but this bugs me just the same.
There is clearly only one action you can take here: Shit in their mailbox!

I guess I'm missing something here. I'm not sure what's so wrong or environmentally unfriendly about dumping yard waste in the woods when it's compostable/bio-degradable.

Do you really think hiring a company (that comes in a motorized vehicle) to pick up your yard waste weekly is environmentally friendly? Why not just get a compost or throw it in the woods?

We've got this little triangle of woods, maybe 200 ft wide at the bottom of the hill down to 50 ft at the top. Is it wrong to not expect it to be used as the neighborhood dumping ground when the city will pick up their leaves for free? The waste service that I pay for is extra, we don't want do dump all the dead limbs and yard waste in our woods because we don't want to trash it up, but I shouldn't complain if my neighbors do?

Maybe I should go take a photo of what I'm talking about. I don't think you realize the amount of yard waste my neighbors can generate, they all have big yards and many oaks too.
