Wexler Claims 100K Signatures For Cheney Impeachment
Heidi Pickman
Cheney Impeachment: Wexler Claims 100K Signatures Posted December 19, 2007 | 07:07 PM (EST) Last Friday, Representative Robert Wexler, along with Representatives Tammy Baldwin and Luis Gutierrez, called for impeachment trials against Vice President Dick Cheney. In that email he announced that he had put up a website to gather signatures. Well, congrats Congressman. Five days later you have 100,000 signatures. Josh Rogin, your press guy, said that the Congressman was "very surprised, but he knew from traveling around Florida how passionate people were, but [we got to 50,000] faster than imagined." He also said 'the MSM is greeting [the press releases] with a yawn.' The Washington Post'sPolitical Hour online chat dismisses the whole idea of impeachment as a viable topic to cover because in, the reporter's opinion ,it won't happen. Winnipeg, Canada: Can you explain why the move by three members of the judiciary committee for impeachment hearings against the Vice President has not received much media attention? I didn't see anything in the online Washington Post, for instance. Rep. Wexler apparently has gathered 80,000 signatures supporting his position on his website. This appears to be big news to me. Michael Abramowitz: To be quite honest, I am not aware of whether we have written about this. We have gotten these questions in one form or another over several years: Impeachment is not going to be happening under this Congress, even if there are some lawmamakers [sic] who think it is a good idea. So the media moves on to other things. The Miami Herald finally posted Wexler, et. al.'s letter today and has received a bunch of comments, mostly egging on Wexler. (Two local Florida papers, the Sun-Sentinel and the Palm Beach Post have covered the issue. Well, Congressman, I was interested in what 100,000 people (and counting) think. And as a potential constituent (for full disclosure - yes, I just moved into his district) I want to know what you are going to do next. The Congressman is flying back from China tonight. Tomorrow night Rep. Wexler will be appearing on Florida Progressive Radio (blogtalkradio.com) at 9pm EST to discuss his next steps. Rogin, Rep. Wexler's press guy, gave me a hint about what the Congressman will say. He said, "The goal is to go to Conyers and the leadership. This shows how many people are desperate for accountability." But he also said the new goal is 250,000. I hope that the next steps will include more than just announcing a new goal for the number of signatures. If not, his efforts will look like another attention grabbing online scheme and sound a bit like a boy crying wolf. We'll find out tomorrow. I'll be listening. |

Wexler On Impeachment: ‘This Is Not The Lunatic Fringe — This Is Mainstream America’
Today on the Ed Schultz Show, Rep. Robert Wexler (D-FL) discussed his effort to increase public pressure for the commencement of impeachment hearings against Vice President Dick Cheney. Wexler has launched a website — WexlerWantsHearings.com — to collect signatures in support of his call. Wexler explained that he launched his website after traditional media outlets rejected an op-ed he had written with his colleagues Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI): Wexler said he has been “astonished” by the outpouring of support — over 100,000 have signed up in five days. He said he plans to write a letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) in early January, asking him to begin start impeachment hearings. “This is not the lunatic fringe — this is mainstream America,” Wexler said. These are “people that believe in the very patriotic vision, and they’re all very upset about what they see as the abuse of power by this administration and the failure of Congress to hold them accountable.” Filed under: Ethics Posted by Faiz at 1:45 pm |

Fuck you, it's freedom of expression. Now, really shooting those cocksuckers some might call treason, I would call it a very good start. Given the opportunity, I would pull that trigger so fast on Cheney and consider it the greatest thing I could do for humanity.

Lawmaker: Impeach Cheney Florida Democrat takes on Bush administration in cyberspace By LESLEY CLARK McClatchy-Tribune WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Robert Wexler is taking on the Bush administration — in cyberspace. The Florida Democrat has launched a Web site — wexlerwantshearings.com — and is gathering signatures calling for impeachment hearings against Vice President Dick Cheney. "Our Constitution mandates that the House of Representatives hold presidents and vice presidents accountable when they commit high crimes," Wexler says in a video on the site, which suggests, among other things, that Cheney manipulated intelligence to boost the case for war against Iraq and was involved in the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame. Within two days of posting, Wexler said he had surpassed his goal of 50,000 signatures and is aiming for 250,000. He's written an op-ed article with two fellow members of the House Judiciary committee, calling for hearings into whether Cheney violated the Constitution. Though the push is, as Wexler acknowledges, a "huge uphill battle" because House leadership has not been interested, the quest has made him a favorite of left-leaning activists. "It's phenomenal. I think he's a very brave person to go against the Democratic leadership," said Diane Lawrence, a member of the South Florida Impeachment Coalition, which began calling for impeachment hearings last August. "He's gaining momentum. This is what people around the country were waiting for." Wexler, a veteran member of the House Judiciary Committee, hopes to deliver the signatures to the committee in January when Congress returns to Washington. Democratic House leaders, however, have sought to quash earlier efforts, with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi saying before Democrats even took control of Congress that impeachment was "off the table." Rep. Dennis Kucinich, a Democratic contender for president, introduced a resolution earlier this year calling for Cheney's impeachment. It was referred to the judiciary committee. Cheney spokeswoman Megan Mitchell said the vice president "is focused on the serious issues facing this country." Wexler, who calls his 2002 vote to authorize Bush to attack Iraq a mistake, told listeners of Florida Progressive Radio last week that Congress "is way behind the rest of the country on the impeachment issue." Wexler said the hearings wouldn't impede other House business. |
