Bush and the congress

Bush has another13 months in office.

On one hand, I am annoyed that the dems seem to "cave in" on so many issues.

On the other hand, I wonder what kind of temper tantrum our president might throw, and who it would hurt, if they really did stand up and not let him have his way.

How would he react, for example, if congress refused money for his war? My view has been he'd stop social security checks before he'd stop the war.

It may well be that the wisest thing congress can do, short of votes to impeach or force legislation, is simply try to wait it out until we have a new president.

Congress knows they will never get enough votes to override a veto, so they cave. This much I understand but at this point it's the entire body of all of them that I am fed up with. Nobody seems to care about the best interest of the people. Congress, though out gunned acts like they must show up to work even though they don't want to, they have no passion and have been beaten down at every turn.

BTW none of our beloved front running candidates bothered to show for the recent debates in congress leading up to the 555 billion check to Bush. Guess campaigning means more than taking a couple of days off to actually push for something.

This is always the excuse, but the reality is that there is another way to defund the war. A group of just 41 Democrats in the Senate could block, by filibuster, and war funding that does NOT mandate a firm, clear timetable for withdrawal.

Right! And only Chris Dodd, national hero, bothered to come to the floor of the Senate to block the FISA bill that included retroactive telecom immunity.

I wish Dodd would challenge Harry Reid for Majority Leader!

Having been in a voting body, there were votes where I knew my presence and vote would mean something and other votes where mine wouldn't change anything, so I can handle them missing such votes.

They could just not send any bill, that would defund the war. It would not, I think, stop the war.

This administration would simply move other funds to finance the Iraq fiasco.

I don't know how many here play chess, but I can remember playing when achieving a stalemate looked good.

Assuming the ppl in the "good party" really want to end the war:

How is that message best conveyed........

A.) funding the war as per the demand of the president, albeit reluctantly @ least publicly........

B.) telling him to fuck off in any of the various ways the forefathers prepared for them... Thus showing the president as well as the rest of the world that the American ppl & the American congress do not support this illegal war.

It would up the ante, wouldn't it?

Perhaps at the same time, Rep. Pelosi, Chair of the House Invertebrate Caucus, might let Conyers start impeachment hearings. That would send the message, eh?
