How much control/influence over other countries

Is it me, or do the people of the USA believe the USA should be running the world?

I accept the fact the we live in a more "global" world than we used to.

I accept the fact that we ought to be concerned about who has what weapons and such.

What I have trouble accepting is why we are so surprised when other countries don't do things the way we'd like them to. Especially when we enjoy low cost goods coming from some of those countries.

We borrow money from some of them.

Meanwhile, we have a lot of lofty ideals we like to brag about, but can't seem to live by. We believe all nations should live by those ideals.

Put bluntly, where do we get the "right" to tell any other country they can't have the same weapons we have?

How can we tell a country to treat its employees better when we buy so many products made by those ill treated employees?

This is why the US is not well perceived, liked or respected.

What?!!

You mean PNAC is wrong? It's not our destiny/obligation to rule the world through military force?

My whole world... It's turned upside down....

Short answer: way to much......................

This is how narrow the perspective is.......

As you said the vast majority of Americans in both parties believe this is a good thing..... For them!!!!!!!

They naively avoid/deny their own culpability & the benefit to self......

The pursuit & protection of "American interest" is deeply ingrained.....

"Government is the shadow cast by business over society" ~ John Dewey

In my Opinion, America much resembles a (albeit shadowy) model of the Roman Empire. Pax Romana...Pax Americana...? At least the Romans didn't ever pretend to "care" about the Nations they conquered. They just brought the Hammer down, whereas America uses the Iron Fist in Velvet Glove approach, trying to create the Illusion their efforts are humanitarian, when in reality, it's all about getting rich, making money. Wars are very profitable. For some.

America was once a shining Light, a Beacon for those who sought Freedom from Opression, Religious and Political Persecution, but now, America is a bloated, corrupt Shadow of what it once stood for. Freedom?

America is the perverbial Glass House. Everybody's throwing Stones. Will we, as a Species, ever beat our Swords into Plowshares? Or will we bring Einstein's Quote into fruition, that "the Fourth War will be fought with Stones"?

It's beginning to appear (to me) that the Inmates are running the Asylum on a Global Scale.

But then...I'm a Pessimist at Heart.

Pessimists are rarely disappointed.

I didn't hear all the candidates comment on the events in Pakistan yesterday, but the few I did here sounded like we're the parents and Pakistan (and other countries) are our children.

It just strikes me as an arrogant perception of our place in the world.
