political speak and critical thinking
I believe what people running for office say can be divided into several categories.
1. They may pledge to do something that is doable, with help they may or may not get. It's a goal that can be reached. 2. They may pledge to do something they really have no control over, or no way to really expect to be able to do. These are regretable. 3. They may get asked a question, like "Do you support gay marriage," that an honest supporting of gay marriage is political suicide, and the question should not have been asked. There may be categories I've overlooked, but the point is that it is important for us, when listening to there words to ask which of such categories their words fall into. Are they telling us they want to do something they've got a legitimate shoat at achieving? Are they making a promise that is not withing their province to keep? Are the fudging an answer in order to not doom their campaign? We each need to apply some critical thinking of our own to weigh the merits of their words.
