Huckabee campaigning for 23% sales tax

Interesting concept, even though the guy is nuts.

WASHINGTON -- Mike Huckabee, one of the most conservative Republicans in the 2008 presidential race, has embraced one of the most radical ideas on the campaign trail: a plan to abolish all federal income and payroll taxes and replace them with a single 23% national sales tax.

It's a consumption tax. Whereas only the wealthy have previously been able to fully enjoy tax avoidance, now everyone gets a more evenhanded shot. You don't buy, you don't pay. Simple, and not crazy at all.

When one starts asking serious questions, this thing is shown for the whacky idea it is.

Suppose you are below the taxable income, you still have to pay the sales tax.

If there is going to be a government mechanism to refund you what you pay in sales tax, what's the point of replacing the IRS.

The ONLY concept I've ever found that I like is the one I wrote.

Zero taxes of any kind come out of the first $15k. At that level, a flat income tax begins. At 25k, payroll taxes begin, and these flat rate taxes, income and payroll come out of every dollar above those figures.

You'd still need some way of coordinating multiple jobs.

Flat tax is bullshit

Unless..........................

you don't tax food, utilities, clothing, gas, ie. basic expenses. Otherwise, it eats up XX% of a poor persons money, while taking .0000XX$ of a rich persons money.

A straight flat sales tax is worse than what we have now.

The Fair Tax thing seemed like a good idea at first, up until these crazy fuckers hijacked it into this weirdness now.

Which, of course, means you'd have to fill out applications stating your dependents, your income, etc........

So, what's the point of abolishing the IRS to replace it with something else.

I actually like the idea of flat rate tax (income) starting at some specified level, and payroll taxes kicking in at some other specified level, as a concept.

You would, of course, be giving up child deductions, and you'd have to find a way to coordinate multiple incomes from multiple jobs.

The devil is always in the details.

I have never heard or read an ultimately persuasive argument against a Flat Tax.

It's not a progressive tax, like income tax is (supposedly anyway).

Poor and lower economic class have to pay a higher percentage of their income out to live.
Since they have to spend most/all of their paychecks

The rich can get away without capitol tax gains - they are already only 15% compared to the top rate of 33% - why should they get a free ride on unearned income?

Also -there would be no more home mortgage deduction
