"Defending ourselves" has many meanings

Fires. Floods, Hurricanes. The more trained people, the more equipment available, the fewer people die.

Doesn't this all count?

Acts of God cannot be stopped. Hurricanes? How the hell do you stop one? Wildfires are natural. We just want to live up the sides of mountains and out in the wilderness. Floods? Water management projects are blocked by environmentalists. And people who want to live up mountainsides want to clear the brush and that causes additional runoff and mudslides.

Not too many "wildfires" are natural; there always seems to be an arsonists.

Well you refute to point of the thread poster that the war is sucking away our ability to police arsonists. What? We post the military on every hillside? And even then researchers say it is powerlines that are causing the fires during heavy winds. What? We use the military during windy weather to monitor the power lines? Eric just lets anybody in here.

Solutions could more quickly be developed if less money went to the military, and more went into R&D.
