"Getting" (understanding) Mrs. Clinton

Quote:
DECLARATIONS -By PEGGY NOONAN

Getting Mrs. Clinton
March 28, 2008; Page W18
I think we've reached a signal point in the campaign. This is the point where, with Hillary Clinton, either you get it or you don't. There's no dodging now. You either understand the problem with her candidacy, or you don't. You either understand who she is, or not. And if you don't, after 16 years of watching Clintonian dramas, you probably never will.

That's what the Bosnia story was about. Her fictions about dodging bullets on the tarmac -- and we have to hope they were lies, because if they weren't, if she thought what she was saying was true, we are in worse trouble than we thought -- either confirmed what you already knew (she lies as a matter of strategy, or, as William Safire said in 1996, by nature) or revealed in an unforgettable way (videotape! Smiling girl in pigtails offering flowers!) what you feared (that she lies more than is humanly usual, even politically usual).

But either you get it now or you never will. That's the importance of the Bosnia tape.

Many in the press get it, to their dismay, and it makes them uncomfortable, for it sours life to have a person whose character you feel you cannot admire play such a large daily role in your work. But I think it's fair to say of the establishment media at this point that it is well populated by people who feel such a lack of faith in Mrs. Clinton's words and ways that it amounts to an aversion. They are offended by how she and her staff operate. They try hard to be fair. They constantly have to police themselves.

So this is the result:

Hillary's Approval Rating Plummets In NBC/WSJ Poll
Chuck Todd Msnbc March 26
As expected, one of the two major Democratic candidates saw a downturn in the latest NBC/WSJ poll, but it's not the candidate that you think. Hillary Clinton is sporting the lowest personal ratings of the campaign.
Moreover, her 37% positive rating is the lowest the NBC/WSJ poll has recorded since March 2001.

Never a fan of Peggy Noonan,
  • author of Reagan's morning in America speech
  • Bush 41's "kindler, gentler America"
  • and Bush 41's "thousand points of light"

but she really nailed this one. It is painful to acknowledge but at least this doesn't coat another turd with a patina of righteous glory. My how some eat that crappola right up.

I'll still be gentle on her supporters who for one reason or another give her their unconditional love and support. Whether it be the emotional insult of a philandering spouse, stress over their place in an overtly racist/misogynistic society or the thrill every woman must share over one of their own having ascended despite all the crap and roadblocks thrown in their and her path. Even those assessments are cynical so it wouldn't be unfair to think that some simply feel she'd do a better job, buying the experience thing. For that matter any one of these candidates could surprise or shock us for better or for worse.

The things one is willing to overlook or at which one bristles upon being when beckoned to assess rationally...well these things are in some ways more telling of the supporter than the candidate.

The same could be said of any cadidates supporters, I suppose but could any candidates supporters have as much latent dissonance as Hillary's? Does it find its way out in a reasoned tradeoff of means vs. ends? Must they conjure up persecution as justification for their girl going negative?

I'd expect that to find virtue in some recent tactics one must buy into politics being a dirty game and to maintain an innocent self-image, that others did it first and made it necessary...a variation on "when in Rome do as the Romans do."

Still, I'd vote for her before John McBush.

If/when she loses I think her head will spntaneously explode, implode or combust and I don't want to be anywhere around because it will be messy. Someone will have to tell her to step away from the podium and keep her hands where they can see them. She cannot lose and must win at any cost...or so it seems. As she tells it the costs are too high for her to be denied.

So what if more people want someone else?

Bill & Hillary Clinton’s Top 5 Lies to Voters
thinkonthesethings.wordpress.com
[i]Lies, lies, just lies, lies about Barack Obama, NAFTA, Bosnia, 9-11, Iraq War, Monica Lewinsky, campaign finance, universal health care, etc. Here are Bill and Hillary Clinton's TOP 5 lies to the voters of Ohio and the nation (to date). “Obama’s best hope is that Democratic voters aren’t as dumb as Hillary and Bill Clinton think they are.”
Jonathan Alter, Newsweek

#1 Bill Clinton lied to voters at their rallies and said he had been opposed to the Iraq war from the start.

(1:47)

#2 Hillary Clinton lied and said she had been opposed to NAFTA. After an advocacy group sued to have her First Lady records released, it was revealed that she had supported and advocated for NAFTA.

“Obama’s best hope is that Democratic voters aren’t as dumb as Hillary and Bill Clinton think they are.”
Jonathan Alter, Newsweek

I am amazed that Jonathan Alter actually said that, but it is so very true.

Which brings up an issue that should perhaps be started as a thread,
as suggested by PPatt on the general discussion board: suddenly
I have become very irritated by the laziness of the MSM.

Anyone who can afford some kind of web connection and can do the
google could have fact-checked 80% of Hillary's lies. Instead we
have these constant accusations of "infighting" which is seldom more
than Hillary telling a whopper and the Obama campaign calling her
out.

In one debate I am sure that Obama tried to say that Hillary had spoken of her support for NAFTA in her autobiography. Hillary snapped at him about Rezko, and a Rovean Hillary-Harper smear hurt Obama right before Ohio.

Hillary has been talking about this war movie trip to Bosnia since as early as December. Why did it take until late March for CBS to
find the tapes? Why didn't Andrea Mitchell say, "I was there -- didn't happen." Why do we even have a mainstream media?

Why has the MSM allowed her to boast about how
much she learned from her noble effort to give everyone health care in her husband's first term.
Why has no one pointed out how many millions of
dollars her botched, arrogant effort cost the taxpayers?

And why has the MSM lost all interest in the three breaches of
Obama's passport? Oh, I forgot. A supervisor at the State Department told a trainee to type in her mother's name and the trainee typed in "Hillary Clinton" -- same thing. No foul. I give up.

Like everyone else, I had more or less bought into the Hillary-is-brilliant hype. By the second debate, I was quite sure that she is
not brilliant. She is very pedestrian, very mediocre. Biden, Richardson, Dodd, Kucinich, and Edwards were all far more articulate
than the Hillary. Of course, who can be sure -- since she was the only one talking down to us.

In Carl Bernstein's biography of her, he states that she realized in
high school that there were a lot of students smarter than her and that she would have to work twice as hard. She flunked the D.C.
bar and didn't tell anyone that she had flunked it for years. She is
good at memorizing policy crap and regurgitating it on cue, but, as she said, "Words are cheap."

Hillary Claims She "Spoke Out Against" NAFTA Starting In 1992
ABC News March 31, 2008

Sen. Hillary Clinton campaigning in Indiana:

Quote:
"I spoke out against it starting in 1992 -- the president made a different decision," Clinton said. "I think now with 14 years of experience under our belt, we can see that in some parts of our country there have been, perhaps, some economic advantages, but in other parts of our country, like where we are right here in northwest Indiana, it hasn't worked as it was promised, and therefore I think we need to renegotiate it."
Given that Clinton was the headline attraction at a pro-NAFTA meeting in November 1993 and was praising NAFTA in public throughout the 90s, the claim seemed interesting. When was she "speaking out" against it?

Clinton campaign communications director Howard Wolfson says that Clinton argued against supporting NAFTA internally on the 1992 campaign before then-Gov. Bill Clinton decided to support it.
