Richard Mellon Scaife to Endorse Hillary Clinton

Keith Olbermann read an "editorial" from the Pittsburgh Tribune Review on Countdown tonight, but transcript won't be up until tomorrow or I would not quote World Net Daily. (Mellon Scaife founded NewsMax and was at one time the third largest stockholder.)

Olbermann called Mellon Scaife the "Godfather of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy"

No. 1 'Clinton hater' may endorse Hillary
'Vast, right-wing conspiracy' leader now holds 'very favorable' opin

Richard Scaife

WASHINGTON – Rush Limbaugh isn't the only surprise supporter in Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign. Only thing is, this guy is for real.

Continuing the transition from No. 1 Clinton media enemy to political ally, Richard Mellon Scaife, publisher of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and a principal owner of NewsMax.com, met with Hillary Clinton and pronounced he now has a favorable view of the presidential candidate and may even endorse her in the Pennsylvania primary.

Noting that his paper had criticized some of Clinton's policies the very day she visited the editorial board last week, Scaife praised her courage for walking into what could have been a lion's den.

"Reading that, a lesser politician – one less self-assured, less informed on domestic and foreign issues, less confident of her positions – might well have canceled the interview right then and there," he writes in a special column today. "Sen. Clinton came to the Trib anyway and, for 90 minutes, answered questions. Her meeting and her remarks during it changed my mind about her."

Actually, though, Scaife's mind has been changing about the Clintons for some time, as WND previously reported.

Scaife said he found more areas of agreement with Clinton than disagreement – especially on the Iraq war and domestic policy matters.

"Does all this mean I'm ready to come out and recommend that our Democrat readers choose Sen. Clinton in Pennsylvania's April 22 primary?" he asked in his column. "No – not yet, anyway. In fairness, we at the Trib want to hear Sen. Barack Obama's answers to some of the same questions and to others before we make that decision. But it does mean that I have a very different impression of Hillary Clinton today than before last Tuesday's meeting – and it's a very favorable one indeed."

The turnaround for Scaife is striking, indeed.

There is little question that when then-first lady Hillary Clinton famously lashed out at foes as a "vast, right-wing conspiracy," Scaife was one of the people on her mind. It was Scaife, an heir to fortunes made in banking, oil and aluminum, who subsidized the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and underwrote countless conservative and Republican causes – including "the Arkansas Project," specifically designed to expose Clinton scandals.

But that was then. This is now.

Since Hillary answer questions posed by members of Mellon Scaife's
editorial board last week, including a planted question about
Jeremiah Wright, it will be interesting to see if she repudiates
the endorsement of a man who tried for years to prove that she
murdered Vince Foster.

Sciafe is talking about an endorsement in the primary -not necessarily the general.

Take it on face value. why do you look for nefarious motives?
Clinton walked into the lion's den.
No matter what you think of her -her reputation is one of a fighter.

Scaife obviously respects that.

And now is a different time than the 90's. Maybe he mellowed.
Maybe he simply respects her fighting spirit.

Sure. Maybe Hillary did off Vince Foster and maybe she really admires Mellon Scaife for being smart enough to call her out on it.

I posted links last week to many racist, right wing hate organizations
that Mellon Scaife endows -- but you are right, of course -- this is
only the primary election.

I do not care for Mr. Scaife, but it bears repeating exactly of what his statement consists, since Ms. Lee is hell bent on ignoring that in favor of pushing another pseudo "endorsement".

This "endorsement" consists of an appreciation for Ms. Clinton's willingness to engage her political enemies head on, something I am certain, and I hope, Mr. Obama will do as well. If Mr. Scaife agrees with Ms. Clinton on Iraq that can only mean he is against the war, at least as it is currently conducted, and believes we should get out, and again proves the adage about the stopped clock's correct reflection of the time twice per day.
In fact, if Mr. Scaife favors withdrawl he may have found himself at odds with Mr. Obama's former policy advisor, who expressed doubts about Mr. Obama's own plans for withdrawl. He may, however, be alarmed at one of Mr. Obama's
current foreign policy advisor's warning
that neither Mr. Obama or Ms. Clinton (or, to be fair, Mr. McCain) was prepared to answer the infamous "3 am call".

The Clinton Campaign Finds New Allies: Richard Mellon Scaife and Fox News

Yahoo News, April 1, 2008

Thomas de Zengotita
Tue Apr 1, 11:02 AM ET

This is incredible. It shows just how low the Clintons are stooping as they battle to return to the throne they think belongs to them.

Hillary chooses to do an interview with the Pittsburgh Tribune Review. This paper has a lot of influence over Reagan Democrats in Western Pennsylvania -- so that seems like a reasonable choice, if you want to churn up opposition to an African-American with a shot at the presidency.

But this paper is owned by far-right mogul Richard Mellon Scaife. He was present at the interview, and he wrote a column supporting Hillary after the interview. That's what happened.

Now Scaife was one of the main sources of funding for the vast right wing conspiracy against the Clintons back in the day. He supported efforts to show that the Clintons arranged for the murder of Vince Foster -- remember that? And that's just one example.

Never mind. Hillary's happy to suck up to him now. This is really incredible. As a measure of desperate ambition, it's off the charts.

Then there's Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell on Fox praising them for providing the most objective coverage of the Democratic primary. That's a minor exhibition of shamelessness compared to the Scaife story -- but it suggests a really damning possibility. This may be an organized effort to use the classic Republican "southern strategy" with working class Democrats in Pennsylvania, who may be vulnerable to it still. If that's right, this makes Big Bill's racial innuendo tactic in South Carolina look innocent by comparison -- and they were far from innocent. But, giving him the benefit of the doubt, it might have been off the cuff. If we get one more Clinton Fox/Scaife moment in Pennsylvania we will know: it's a plan.

oh, come on! this is soooooo obviously part of the gop "chaos project" - there are so many republican operatives working on extending the primary now it's difficult to name them all.

and naturally, hillary is MORE than happy to play along in this election tampering.

Gees, what is it with you Obama supporters and reading between the lines?

Why can't you just take everything at face value and ignore that intelligent part of your brain that forces you to ask questions?

I mean come on, all that's gonna do is help you get to the truth of things.

What good is that?

Mr. Zengotita has an opinion and expresses it. Others have differing opinions and express those. What one "reads between the lines" compared to another is dependent on how much hatred with which one is consumed.
I suspect it can be partly measured based upon how much irrelevant personal invective one brings to an "argument".
I can also be measured based upon how much suspicion one brings to "reading between the lines".
Mr. Zengotita acknowledges, perhaps sarcastically, that the "Reagan Democrats", deeply mistaken though they were and are to this day, would be useful for the upcoming general election, then he throws the race card on the table with breathtaking gusto. But since he agrees with the poster, then apparently we are to take his point of view as the final word on the subject.
