Differences in healthcare

Though Obama and Hillary's healthcare packages are similar, it was good to see Elizabeth Edwards on Olbermann the other day because she outlined the differences. Regardless of candidates, I don't agree with a system where you have to pay even if you don't need to. Not that Hillary's is bad, certainly better than McCain's by a mile but it is a hurdle for me.

However, I have a lot of respect for Elizabeth and enjoyed listening to her. You could see that she cares a lot about the issue and not the politics, a refreshing change. She also comes across very genuine and kind. If Hillary wins the nomination, I will support her package thanks to Elizabeth.

Couldn't people pay for healthcare the way they pay for bigscreen TV's? You know, like $12 a month for 50 months?

no..but you should be able to purchase a plan from the government, just like you do blue cross/blue shield.

it will years to drive some of the costs down, nothing is going to happen overnight.

I wouldn't oppose SMALL mandates TO the government (not bluecross or any other private insurer) just so the government could build revenue up in medicare...and be able to expand medicare to anyone that wants it.
25$/month... something along those lines...more if you make more.

fair really isn't...all that complicated

People are going to pay, one way or another. Whether it's in the form of lower wages and higher costs for goods in a largely employer provided system, or in higher taxes in the form of a government provided system, or higher costs of premiums for a private system.

The cost savings can be realized by sharing the risk -- stop letting insurance companies cherry-pick their customers -- reduce the profit motive from the business. Update records systems to electronic information-age technology, focus on preventive care and lifestyle education, etc...
