nc robo calls giving false information to african american voters

Elections board hunting robocaller | newsobserver.com projects

From the NC News & Observer

Elections board hunting robocaller

State elections officials are asking for the public's help in identifying the source of misleading and potentially illegal robocalls.

In at least one version of the call, a man says that voter registration packets must be returned before a person can vote. The State Board of Elections released a transcript of the call.

"Hello, this is Lamont Williams. In the next few days, you will receive a voter registration packet in the mail. All you need to do is sign it, date it and return your application. Then you will be able to vote and make your voice heard. Please return the voter registration form when it arrives. Thank you."

Bob Hall, executive director of Democracy North Carolina, said in a news release that the calls were being made to African American households. The good government watchdog posted audio of the call.

"This is another in a long line of deceptive practices used in North Carolina and elsewhere that particularly target African-American voters," Hall said. "In our view, this phone message plainly violates North Carolina law. We ask the Attorney General, State Bureau of Investigation, and the State Board of Elections to investigate, expose, and prosecute the sponsors of these calls."

Hall said that in North Carolina, it is a Class I felony for any person "to misrepresent the law to the public through mass mailing or any other means of communication where the intent and the effect is to intimidate or discourage potential voters from exercising their lawful right to vote."

The state board is asking anyone with information about the source of the calls to contact the State Board of Elections at (919) 733-7173 or toll free 1-866-522-4723. If any citizens are uncertain about their voter registration status, they may call their county board of elections or check online.

The thing is, Lamont Whats-his-face did not necessarily misrepresent the law on this. We will all have to wait for a follow up to this story. He may actually be working to make it easier to get people to register to vote by sending the necessary forms to fill out and return to the proper authorities. Nothing in either this story or the transcript gives any indication of motive one way or the other.

If the call was received in voter households, there is no need for voters to re-register. This seems to be the issue.

Plus, the "return the packet" instructions might be incorrect. I don't know how ppl register in that state.

Yes, but we don't know what's in the packet. It very well could state that no action need be taken if they are already registered.

It seems to me that if this were a scam, it would have been planned better. There would be no need for making a phone call at all because obviously they are going to be recorded. A scam would have been more effective if they just mailed whatever those packets are without drawing attention to themselves first.

Probably the Republican. If a black person wins the White House, even a half-black person, it means doom for the Republican party. You know your own party... made up of KKK members and Nazi's... exclusively white supremacists (especially old people who were indoctrinated with racist garbage), and a few disillusioned Mexicans apparently (for unknown reasons).

If Hillary wins... whites retain their racial monopoly a while longer. Long enough for you to die, maybe?

it's being investigated by the state board of elections to determine who's behind it - the calls appear to be targeting BLACK communities.

WAVY TV 10 - News, Weather, Traffic, Sports for Hampton Roads, Virginia - North Eastern North Carolina - Robocall is wrong about voter registration

"The State Board of Elections says an automated phone call to households tells the listener to wait for a voter registration packet to come in the mail in the next few days.

But the registration period has already ended, although people can go to early voting locations statewide through Saturday and both register to vote and cast a ballot on the same day."

You are correct the registration period has ended for the primary and that they still make arrangements to register and vote during what they call One-Stop Registration & Absentee Period.

If this is a fraudulent attempt to suppress black voters then I can't see how this is going to help anyone but Hillary, unless there are local initiatives to vote for also. In that case, this could be state electoral shenanigans.

This country will never be a true leader unless our government is comprised of all races, genders, and religions, working together for the equal good.

Hillary might be a woman, but she is a white woman. How many years will it set things back if we do not elect Obama? When will there be another non-white having any chance of breaking the crucial barrier? Either way, the barrier will be broken, but when? And how much turmoil will there be because we waited?

Our primary is already decided. The election of importance that is upcoming in North Carolina is between two Democrats.

I can't imagine McCain doing this. Pretty sure it's the Hillary Clinton machine. But knowing Axelrod, it might be Obama.
