No kidding, Jonesy!

However, Obama used it several times in the GMA interview with Michelle. Was not sure who started it, Merideth Viera or the Obamas.

Seriously, what would you recommend he use...?
People..? ...?

the folk rebellion

perhaps...'lowly proletariat,' might have been better?

or, 'y'all' in some states.

What about just "Americans" or "people"?

Maybe "folks" is used more since the so- called elitism jabs.
Those words are fine too.

I think Jonesy hit it though. The word "folks" is used by older people, and is probably why you don't care for the term.

W has completely over used the term.

That's most likely the main reason I don't like it.

We now know he never had any respect for the voters.

Clintion should use: "My peeps"
Obama should use: "My homies"
McCain should use: "My suckers"

anti-folk

I think the term can be used in different ways.

Obama's use of it relates to his projected image of being a 'man of the people,' a rhetorical strategy employed by many, many politicians, particularly democrats.

W's use is disrepectful because he's treated the american people in a disrespectful manner, hence the term 'folks' becomes, in a way, elitist.

I can't object to the term, though if it's intended meaning is to pluto the voting public, then it becomes separatist.

At least John McCain isn't putting up any pretenses.

How about something a bit more humbling to the speaker? Perhaps, "My gracious fellow citizens who have elected me to this office and whom I fight for every day"?

Let's keep'em honest.
If you want honest, it would be more like; "My subordinate citizens who have been duped into electing me to this position of abuse and graft and whom I fuck over every day."

NOW THAT WOULD BE HONEST.
