Don't bother visiting to find out; just go back to your sociology class with your never-dirty overalls.

You know what? I'm sorry Cosmic. I jumped the gun on this one. Visit you say? Ok. Where? Where should we go cosmic? How many people should we talk to in your opinion to get a "good" idea of what people are like down there? Actually screw it. Why waste my time when I can obviously ask you?

I mean it's not like your basing what you know on yourself and the people you know. Because that would be just about the most ignorant thing a person could do.

Obviously you have put some time and effort in gathering a good consensus of what people are like in these states. And while your posting it here for us you might as well send it to all the news agencies so they can stop gathering information, quoting people and doing polls that are obviously completely false and inaccurate. I'm sure they would be greatly appreciative.

How should we categorize these comments?

Quote:
"I won't vote for Obama, because of what he is."

"I really don’t want an African-American as President."

"There’s a lot of white people that just wouldn’t vote for a colored person."

“Obama,” the farmer said, “just doesn’t sound right for an American president.”
Are they defendable?

Do you defend them?

Cry me a freaking river.
Which is fine, cause you won't get wet up in your elitist Ivory Tower.

of course not - nor are they representative.
You might wanna actually visit WV, or the south.
Folks get along pretty fine down here, much more so in the racially tense north.

I' ve visited Decautuer county in Ga.
Nice folks, Atlanta, and the suburbs are racially mixed, with little acrimony between the races.
Compare that to the tension in big cities up north.

I lived in MAryland for a long tme, and had cousins in WV.
They commuted to work to DC, or worked in coal mines, and factorys.

Funny thing is - there is veyr little racial tension - nothing like Philly, or other Northern cities.
But you wouldn't know that, instead , you rely on anecdotal reporters.

Come on down and set a spell. find out how folks live away from the cities.

Well then that settles it.

You should write a book.

You could call it, "Why history, reading books, reading news papers, and getting an education is unAmerican" By My cousins and Me.

how about:
"Why reading books, studying in elitist academia - gives you no clue beyond your Ivory Towers?"

you got lots of co-authors here to choose from.

Statistically, there's a lot of white people in Appalachia (and the South) who won't vote for a black guy. That doesn't mean everybody who lives in those areas is a racist, just that a lot of people who live in those areas are. Have you ever visited NY? Chicago? Pittsburgh? Baltimore? Philadelphia? Etc etc etc? I have. Trust me ignorant racist morons are far from a southern phenomena.

I believe there is a sizable base in Appalachia that could care less about Rev. Wright, Obama's economic plan, or his position on the war-- they're simply not going to even consider voting for a person of color.
