Frankly, most people treat people decently as long as they are treated decently in return! Little bitchy people who trade in sarcastic snarky remarks like Cosmic are clueless when it comes to understanding why they are treated like they are.
When my father bought our 2nd houseboat back in 1976, he got it in Cinncinatti. We had to, therefore, bring it down the Ohio and up the Mississippi to get it back to our home port in Iowa.
We spent an entire summer off and on--- sometimes weeks at a time---cruising on the boat. We spent nights on sand bars or in small town docks on either side of the river (Kentucky or Indiana or Illinois)
We took loads different groups of friends with us over the summer---sometimes all black groups sometimes mixed race groups.
We were treated fabulously at every turn! The men were charming and the women kind and warm and delightful! And YES these were working class white people!
We were always welcomed! We shared food, shared fires, played cards, told stories and the fellas drank a lot. During one rainy stretch of days we were invited to multiple homes of different families to stay until the weather cleared. We declined.
My parents remained friends with many of the couples they met for years---a couple from Tell City Indiana called crying when they heard about my father's death 5 years ago. They visited back and forth and sometimes took boating weekends together.
We had been soooo warned about the dangers of a black family traveling that far south on the river. NONE of the awful things that people worried about happened --- not even kind of! My parents treated people respectfully and with warmth and kindness and were treated in kind by almost everyone all my life---where ever we went!
I get sooo pissed off having grown up in Iowa and met so many wonderful, kind and caring white people in my life that there are still maggots among whites who due to their own defective personalities NEED to try to pretend that everyone---in any income group or at any educational level---is the same trash that they are!
It is a lie----and a rotten one that endangers this nation!

RK, I would never make a negative statement that included ALL people in a given group or geographical area. I know that it's never ever true of everyone.
Except for short people of course.
Your house boat story sounds sooo cool! To make a trip like that is an American classic. It reminds me of that boating commercial they're running now. People wave at people in boats. They try to smile and wave
not from a boat and people pull their children closer, close the shades and quickly walk away.
