a black president will not only be VERY beneficial in terms of race relations here in the U.S. - as bigots realize that nothing much changes (as they always feared it would if that happened)...

but i believe that it will also do MUCH to repair our credibility and standing internationally, as we are seen NOT just as a nation that talks a good talk, but also as one that actually walks the walk against prejudice and equality.

this is a historic step in the history of not just OUR country, but the world. my greatest fear is some fucking idiot will assassinate him and all hell will break loose. not just here, but around the world.

with regards to blacks, i KNOW for a fact that assassination is their greatest fear for the first black president. and i also know that a black president will do much to help their self-esteem. a black president will tell blacks "yes you can" in a society that still too often says "you are second class". the psychological boost will be amazing.

most whites have come to realize that the color of one's skin is meaningless, and only older whites, and whites in economically depressed pockets of the country still cling to their fears of black skin. but jonesy is right. these fears are engrained from birth, and the people who cling to them are dying off.

a black president would be a quantum leap in our national consciousness... one not everyone is ready to take, but then again, there are ALWAYS stragglers when critical mass is reached and there's any major shift.

when the timing's right, nothing can stop a shift from happening.
that's how the world progresses.

I want to ask you if you think it's alright to just come on my lawn.
Not for the hell of it, if you own the property...unless it's jack-booted paramilitary. Then I advise you to stand down...unless you are better armed and have a fail-safe escape plan.

I'd like to ask you if you understand how much work, and effort I put into making my lawn nice.
Perhaps the greatest flaw in the Democratic party...after self-righteousness, hypocrisy and economic nincompoopery...is this wish for everyone to understand how everyone feels.

Who gives a fuck how hard you worked on something that benefits only you?

I'd further like to inquire as to why you think it's okay to come on my lawn, when it's mine.
We're wide-screen: KEEP OFF THE GRASS.

It's posted even on some lawns that are owned by taxpayers. There's a tiny, fenced park...in the manner of London or Savannah, but smaller...situated on a triangle of land at a who-needs-urban-planning-naught-naught-carry-the-two intersection in the heart of West Los Angeles, and it is permanently and heavily locked. You know how the homeless take advantage.

If we're okay with that, we're certainly okay with keeping off your lawn...'specially since it kinda seems like you were never good with three in a sandbox.

And I don't want to hear from anyone whose Frisbee or baseball landed on my lawn. I'd like to keep the conversation focused on my lawn, and whether people should be allowed to be on it.
You got it. They are not entitled to set foot on your property without your permission, even to retrieve personal property that is on your property by their volition.

It is up to you to decide where you figure in what kind of neighborhood relations.

Be not too surprised...pissed, yes, but not surprised...when one of those baseballs goes through one of your windows.

I have been empowered to complain to the newspaper about your suspected purposeful throwing of my morning paper in my bushes.

I am also allowed to watch you when you bicycle down the street, and call your parents about 'all that racket' you're making with the card in your spokes.

I'm all about style. And substance can be more than the heft of a bludgeon

But you COULD use a little color. Let me get my Clinton Crayolas out!

Let's see....Not much left in here. Most of the colors have been used in other depictions of your base.

We've still got....'West Virginia Soot'....Here's 'Waves of Grain Amber'...'Royal Purple Outrage'...'Pandering Pink'...'Blame Shift Chiffon'

How does Heartland Red' grab you? That sounds like the color of the day.

WASHINGTON, DC—An 8,976-foot foul ball off the bat of Washington third baseman Ryan Zimmerman crashed through the U.S. Capitol Building rotunda Sunday afternoon, prompting both the Nationals and the opposing Pittsburgh Pirates to gasp, turn to each other in shock, and immediately run full speed out of Nationals Park.

"As soon as I hit it, I knew it was headed straight toward Capitol Hill—I just kept saying to myself, 'Not the dome, not the dome, not the dome,'" Zimmerman said. Both teams, all four umpires, and the 32,457 fans in attendance winced in horror, however, as the ball kept carrying, made a loud smashing noise, and left a gaping hole in the rotunda's neoclassical architecture.

"We are so dead," Zimmerman added.

As the teams grabbed the bases and scrambled out of the stadium, the Pirates yelled to the Nationals that they were in "big trouble." The Nationals refuted that claim, screaming that "if [Pirates left-fielder] Jason [Bay] could run at all, he would've tracked down the ball and caught it" before it struck the 200-year-old structure, which stands 1.7 miles from the ballpark.

However, as soon as the teams heard the Capitol Building's front door swing open, they put their differences aside and sped frantically back to their hotel rooms.

"Congress is going to be so mad," said Nationals first baseman Nick Johnson, peering out his window, expecting to see the 535 members of the House and Senate pull into the hotel parking lot. "This was the worst time to do it, too, because they're already in a bad mood, what with the election stuff and the war and the recession, and all."

"Aw, man, we're never gonna get that ball back," Johnson added.

The team, however, has urged outfielder Lastings Milledge to dress up in a suit, sneak into the Capitol Building, retrieve the ball, and make the necessary repairs on the shattered sandstone walls of the dome before anyone notices.

According to eyewitnesses in the Capitol, the ball smashed into the dome at about 3:35 p.m., tore through the Apotheosis Of Washington—a 150-year-old, 4,664-square-foot fresco painted on the inside of the rotunda—and broke the arm off of a National Statuary Hall sculpture of William Jennings Bryan. The ball then bounced into the Senate Chamber, where it interrupted a vote on a $542.5 billion defense authorization bill, and landed directly in the mashed potatoes of early-dining Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), covering him with gravy and prompting him to exclaim, "Zimmer-maaaaannnn!"

Although McConnell had no evidence at the time that Zimmerman was responsible for the damages, he was the chief suspect, as he is the only National able to hit the ball farther than 300 feet. Furthermore, Zimmerman dented McConnell's 1998 Buick LeSabre last week when he overthrew first base by 15,000 feet on a routine grounder.

"This is unacceptable—Capitol rotundas don't just grow on trees, you know," read a statement drafted by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi following the event. "Not only are these damages going to cost a fortune—a fortune—to repair, but we specifically told the Washington Nationals baseball organization a thousand times before the season started to be extra-careful and to try not to hit the ball to left field."

The statement went on to demand that the Nationals pay for all the damages, which total over $400 million—more than five times the entire team payroll. Because of this, players are expected to either find part-time jobs to cover the cost or work off the expenses by taking positions as congressional aides in the offseason.

The Pirates have promised to chip in $5, claiming that is all they have right now.

"This stinks," said Zimmerman, who attempted to persuade local resident Henry Adelson, a Nationals season-ticket holder and D.C.-area insurance claims adjuster, to take the rap for him and say he was the one who hit the ball. "We shouldn't have to stop playing just because the lousy U.S. Capitol got in the way. And also hitting the Capitol Building should be an automatic home run."

On Tuesday, Congress announced an initiative to move the Nationals franchise from D.C. to Oklahoma City, Portland, or anywhere far enough away that a batted ball or errant throw will not cause significant damage to American landmarks.

However, President Bush has called such actions "unnecessary" and "too harsh," saying that all will be forgiven if the players come down from their hotel rooms, say they're sorry, promise to be more careful, and allow Bush to participate in team batting practice every day from now through the 2016 season.

I agree w/ most of your points..........

I am now hearing some of the old hippies looking for excuses to leave their party....... Of course it is for every other reason on earth except their own racial issues.........

Like competence in foreign affairs or Obama supporters beating them up......lol

Personally I find it the best thing to happen to this country in a long long time. If ever............

I am hoping that once elected he can do as most politician do once becoming King of the world.. What ever the fuck he feels like......

Like pulling out of the ME.......... Putting America & Americans first... To start focusing on what is really important to Americans.......

Like not being the #1 super power military but being the #1 in taking care of our citizens........

How about being #1 in life expectancy.......

The lowest child mortality rate.........

#1 in education..........

Leading the world on environmental issues.......

Or just promoting dumbocracy some other way than through bombs & killing..............

I suspect that a black president, if it happens, will have a wide variety of affects upon the country.

Those who are racist will likely do what they can to sabotage his presidency, and then, if successful at their sabotage, blame his color, and say it all proves their point.

I think those of us who are not racist will see this as a HUGE step forward for our nation.

The bigger problem, I fear, is that God himself can't get a handle on our debt, do anything about gas prices, etc. and when Obama is unable to keep many of his promises (and he's got expectations very high), many will blame it on his race rather than actual factual reasons.

Let's be honest. We'll continue to spend money in Iraq for at least 2 years AFTER we begin bringing our troops home. That will continue to be borrowed money.

NO PRESIDENT can change this, but HE will be expected to. He will be expected to prevent lobbyists from lobbying congress, although the president has no say in the internal rules of that separate body.

How will this all be perceived three years down the road? I believe that depends totally on how the media covers it.

To answer the initial thread question: apparently, we cannot have a serious discussion on this issue.

I have had a white person actually say to me that if Obama had no white in him, they wouldn't vote for him. I think it's because they think he'll encourage the blacks to take over the country...whooooooo
