I'd like to add an observation that I made as I was growing up.

If the adults around me saw a white male of middle age driving poorly, they would say, "That guy's an idiot"

If they saw a black man driving poorly, their comment would include the entire race.

If they saw a teenager driving poorly, it would be, "Those damned kids."

Just a thought.

Racial bigotry is not just about slave-owner descendants, it's about entire cultures, many generations, and sadly a lack of higher education. It's also not just a US issue--it's a world issue and it's rampant!!

I'm an old person and I'm not agreeable to dying. Racism as with most other issues in the world are psychologically based as you say. Of course if a child lives and breathes any particular behavior chances are they will also develop this behavior. And although some areas of the US and the world receive most of the recognition for racial hatred, it actually is pervasive throughout all cultures and economic levels.

Look at all the xenophobia about Hispanic population growth in the US. This is the same as it was decades ago with the Jews, and the Italians, and the Polish, etc. and now it's a fear of Muslims. As long as there's a higher population of white people in the world, and as long as these same people control much of the resources, there will remain an elitists position. The good thing is that these other repressed ethnicities are growing in population and controlling more resources which evens the playing field and helps balance this issue...over several more decades hopefully everyone can find a way to live in harmony...

Philosophically...it's interesting your statement that it will take a president to 'help their self-esteem'?? This Black president will tell them 'yes you can'.

For many decades now, we've had Black actors, Black news-people, Black military including officers, Black police, Black doctors, Black attorneys, Black clergy, Black government leaders at all levels, Black educators, Black icons like King and Jackson, etc. and very successful Black business people...all of which have been telling their people 'yes you can'. Yet with all of this 'they' still need a Black president to increase their self-esteem??

And finally, if Obama is the person who many feel can make this difference, then why hasn't he made this difference since the day he began his public life? Why must he be president in order to make this difference...

What???? It isn't about self esteem as much as uniting us all as Americans. Not one race over another, not all this ridiculous division between us. A senator can't do as much as a president..we need a strong leader, not some idiot out for more division and bloodshed.
For those who don't want to be united, well that's their choice, their loss, but I've always believed America was the melting pot where we all become one great blend of soup.

I wonder philosophically...if hating a Black person is any different than hating a woman, or hating Republicans, or hating a Muslim, or hating White people, or hating kids, or hating a neighbor or work mate, or hating the Yankees??

Aren't all of us entitled to hate anyone or anything we wish?

Isn't the line drawn supposed to be around the morality of this hatred? If we hate someone, but don't do anything malicious towards that someone, isn't this just our personal opinion--right or wrong?

I'm guessing presidential candidates who are anything but White and Christian will spur a certain amount of hatred. And it's okay to not vote for anyone unless they are White and Christian--this again is a personal choice.

I'm guessing there are millions of people who will not vote for a Black president. Is this morally wrong or is this simply their right to a personal choice???
