Curious George publisher mulls legal action over Obama shirt

By Jay Fitzgerald

Wednesday, May 14, 2008 - Updated 41m ago

Jay Fitzgerald has been a journalist and blogger for years. He's now the general economics reporter for the Boston Herald.

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is considering legal action against a Georgia tavern owner selling T-shirts depicting presidential candidate Barack Obama as the Curious George monkey character.

In a statement, the Boston publisher, which owns the book rights to Curious George, said today the firm finds the T-shirt “offensive and utterly out of keeping with the values Curious George represents.”

The statement, issued by Houghton spokesman Richard Blake, added: “We are monitoring the situation and weighing our options with respect to possible legal action.”

WGBH-TV, which co-produces a “Curious George” children’s television show, has also denounced the use of Curious George in the controversial T-shirt.

A tavern owner in Georgia has been peddling the shirt with a picture of a happy Curious George eating a banana above the words “Obama in ’08.”

The tavern owner, who some have described as an “ultra-conservative,” has denied to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the T-shirt is racist. But protesters outside his tavern say the comparison of Obama, who is an African- American, to a monkey is an old racist stereotype.

I hope they don't. That's all that drizzling shitbag needs is more publicity.

Now you're talkin'. That is exactly how to combat this sort of crap. You can yell all you want, but that only draws more attention. By embracing it with a sense of humor it totally disarms it. Now THAT would piss off the drizzling shitbag reeeeeeeal goooood.

After the Bush campaign continually called John Kerry a flip-flopper,
all Kerry's hip young campaign aides, male and female, wore flip flops
at all times, even with khakis and dress shirts. Unfortunately, it
didn't do the trick, but it was a morale booster.

Yeah but morale is all you have to worry about. With this sort of crap you can get angry, or you can look at the source and you will usually find something to laugh about.

Speaking of which, I will pay cash for a good photo of the moron that's selling these. I feel a wave of inspiration coming on....

That man selling those T-shirts is an evolutionist. So evolutionists believe that blacks ARE closer to the apes within the evolutionary process. As such, only the creationist blacks and whites would be offended by such a notion. Anyone believing in evolution would not, for the monkey would be but a great great ancestor and there would be nothing wrong with such a depiction (or depliction as the stupid motherfucker said).

The theory places humans and other primates as having a common ancestor from which each evolved
in different directions into different species.

Our most direct descendants would be those most like us, Neanderthal being one example. We have no
direct descendants from apes, since they are a different species. Humans and apes cannot produce offspring.
A modern human could, with the help of a time machine and a romantic evening, conceivably (pun intended)
produce offspring with a Neanderthal.

Your understanding of evolution is laced with mythology.

Last I checked it was those most closely associated with creationists that believed black people were not gods chosen race and were instead closer to apes....

So easy a caveman can do it.
