Sorry, for derailing the thread, but I doubt HarperLee was the only one to make that mistake.
As another Clinton once said, "It depends on what the definition of the word IS is."

I think because the word IS is used before the quote, it implies that the appeal is current, and not textually quotable.

If the appeal was textually quotable, it would have read "Clinton's final appeal for the Democratic nomination WAS this:."

But then again, he may have been thinking about doing those quotey symbol hand gesture things that people do when they are being sarcastic.

RP being sarcastic, who'ld have thunk it.

Yes, meaning that he is editorializing that those sentiments, if not those actual words, were spoken, at some time amongst her campaign.

I can believe that the sentiment is there. I still maintain that the meaning of the the quotes is ambiguous, otherwise we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Agreed. To return to topic; I think it is spot on. I really fear a white backlash come the time they step into the booth and get to be with themselves. One that goes way beyond Appalachia.

Hopefully the racist whites wake up and realize it is the white person trying to play them for fools.
