I recently had lunch with a colleague (sp?) of mine. I told him I thought that electing Obama president would go a long way to repairing our reputaion as a just and fair nation.

He said.."WE DONT NEED ANY MORE SOCIAL PROGRAMS!!"

??!!?

Huh?

I said, "OK, ...but I dont think someone will send my kid to be shot at in an Arab country because of a "new social program."

(crickets)

I realized at this point, that him being a foxnews junkie and (I imagine) a Rush listener, we should just agree to disagree. And the ferver behind his response encouraged a change in conversational topic.

This is certainly distressing to me, as I know this person has some intelligence, but has simply made up his mind. The neo-cons have waged a war of dis-information, and unfortunately many Americans think that if someone on TV with nice hair and a white smile says it, it must be true.

Sometimes lies stick. If you hear them over, and over, and over..it will eventually become truth even in the mind of an otherwise intelligent person.

Good of you to have tired to engage and re-inform (sp?) this person.

W has been quoted saying to the effect that if you repeat something often enough that people start to believe it.

Guess it's worked for them to have manipulated so many.

It's ironic, but the right wing has one other social program they don't talk about; that being the programming of social circumstances. They use language and imagery that trgger reptile brained responses. The democratics are starting to do this, but it tends to backfire against their own party because many of their more liberal constituents resent having their intelligence being insulted.

Damn Reptile Brain - the liberal constituents have to be intelligent enough to realize that this is "political war" - do they want to win ? The only way to get at the Reptile is to send messages that the Reptile understands - fear, sex and gluttony. Then once the Reptile is in the cage.....
