My wife is a desert girl, (in fact that is her nickname, if you visit the little Reggie bar on the deserted end of Cozamel you'll find "Rollerball & Desertgirl 2003" carved in a post), she's changed my mind about the desert. Large solar arrays in the desert are a good idea but not the final solution. As you say, it's right up on the roof.

Germany has put us to shame when it comes to taking advantage of solar power. Last I heard they don't have too many deserts there. But it took government programs to encourage people to invest in solar, and they pay more for electricity there, but, (now get this), Germans say they don't mind paying more because they know they are helping the Earth by doing so.

Can you imagine those words tumbling out of the mouth of a Republican?

My brother lives in China at around 7000ft elevation. So the winters are really cold. He purchased a German-made solar water heater. He has hot water all year long. Imagine how much oil we could conserve if everyone had one of these babies.

It should be required that all commercial buildings/parking garages with flat roofs be covered with solar panels feeding back into the grid.

It should be required that all new home construction have maximum insulation properties in all exterior materials.

It should be required that all new home construction have solar panels sufficient to offset the average electric bill by 50%.

Typical homes and businesses cannot operate only with solar panels. They are designed primarily as a supplement to offset public utility costs. But if enough of them are installed in all appropriate locations, perhaps the offset will be enough to not only stop building new nuclear and coal power plants, but perhaps be able to close down a few of the existing ones. Except in rare cases, there is no need to blanket the desert or prairie lands with solar panels...
