Solar energy linked to national grid

I was wondering what people think of somehow linking giant solar panels right to the grid. I think the desert would be a good place to do this although I'm not sure if the grid is there right now.

When they do these huge wind / solar farms what is the impact on the ecology under these "panels" ? If I remember correctly the desert is rather fragile and dune buggies / atv's were having an impact on the habitats.

So far it's only impact has been on people who don't want it in their backyard. I am sure they will eventually find other (legit) issues down the road but overall it's hard to deny it's a very effective renewable resource.

People always assume the desert is bereft of life. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, deserts harbor the most delicate ecosystems on the planet. The answer is not in some faraway desert out-of-sight and out-of mind. It's right above your head, on the roof.

Yes, I was stationed in 29 Palms for school and used to walk from the base to town, hot but fun (dont think that the grunts on training had much fun in it ). Then I went to Saudi and wandered around the Arabian desert for a while - it is cool when it blooms....

I grew up around the Corps. My dad was a photo pilot during the Cold War.

Ain't the Joshua Tree National Monument the shizzle? That's one of my favorite destinations. After a week or so of camping, I like to hit Desert Hot Springs for some serious tubbin'. I love the desert. I lived in the Mojave for a year.

Joshua Tree was great, liked rock jumping. Didnt get to go camping there, I'd probably have gotten a "might bewildered" and become UA. Hope Joshua Tree is still intact, hasnt been "developed", that would be a shame....

Well, it's a National Monument (not the town), so it's not likely it will be developed. Again, the desert is very delicate. I have seen some satanic shit painted on some of the rocks. But, by and large, it's still pristine. I was there for the big bloom in the late '90s. WOW! It looked like an oriental rug. And the insects were equally mind-blowing.
