That is pure bullshit. Yes, they need money but they have to get their government to boost their economy. Making tourisam cheaper might be one way. But to kill off animals for money is fucking stupid. These animals are important to the ecosystems they live in. The more we destroy them, the faster we destroy us.

I don't think he's refuting that, just in some countries their governments really don't care. One of the few governemnts that did care was in Kenya, but what with that country imploding it'll be awhile before the shoot-on-sight anti-poaching policy will be in effect.

Asian elephant exploitation is a little different in that some people still capture and psychologically break them for labor, though it's a dying practice due to changes in the various economies. And many Indian farmers constantly demand that elephants be removed because the elephants have the audacity to continue using their old migration and grazing lands.

That's why it's important for the UN to get involved. I just get offended when people use only parts of animals for money. It was Richard Leakey who got the "shoot poachers on site" going and he burned all the Elephant tusks that were confiscated. We have all seen what Africa is like one way or another, yet we don't help them in any way. That is where the problems lie. We would rather help destroy their land with logging and mining (blood diamonds) than help them. Until we can get these governments to stop their abuses, there is not much hope. We humans and climate change is what is killing these animals off.

The problem is you have several unscrupulous yet powerful members of the U.N. calling the shots. China, Russia and the U.S. can pooch any deal that's made. The U.K. and France likewise have tendencies to fuck things up if they don't see it as making them money. While it might not seem directly connected, the Secruity Council's "permanent five" all are contributing to unrest by selling arms to anyone with a checkbook. So if countries remain in civil war or other conflicts they can't stabilize enough to become good stewards of their environments. Plus. that means more firearms for poachers.

Yes you are right. But if we don't try and call them on it nothing will ever get done and then they will be promoting breeding in zoos to "save" the species which by then will be genetically dead in captivity. I at least want to know I tried when I die. I need to get back to working on my art project. It's 2 eye's cut out of mirror glass and in the first eye is a scene of gorillas in the wild, and the second eye is from a picture I took at the zoo where one of our gorillas is in the Shelter area of the habitat and it looks like she's in a cave looking out. I'm using small beads to make it so you can see your own reflection as well. I'm going to put a scene of logging in the area where she is looking out. I want to donate it to the UN.

I know I posted this on Bill Maher's site but some may not have seen it. It's an article from the Seattle PI.

Like I said, there's too much money in it for the "permanent five." Any plan to save wild species will have go on without any help from the U.N. I'd recommend private and NGO doners to provide fuding for programs to teach locals how to build up and maintain a wildlife tourism industry.

Yes, that is been tried, but it needs backing from the UN.

Then we're fucked, because the U.N. is slave to its five bullies.
