Believe me, even if the breeding stopped right now, zoos will be here for many years to come. We had a Jaguar who killed his mother. It was upset from zoo construction. The zoo told the public, and workers, that the male was trying to "breed" with it's mother, she rejected him and he jumpered her killing her. He killed her in a panic, not because of breeding. Related animals are either put on birth control, fixed, or moved. And yes, some animals can take birth control. Like I said, you had no clue did you? Also when the Jaguar got a new exhibit, it was smart enough to know when no one was looking and chewed a hole through the metal mesh and finally got his head through before anyone noticed! You didn't know about that and neither did the public. Can you imagine what could have happened had that Jaguar gotten out? This happen more than you know.

Look GoMom...I know zoos are not perfect, just as you and me certainly are not as well. But they do a damned good job and if things were really as bad as you say, the public would know about it. I cannot believe 'ALL' employees of zoos, if they know of such harsh conditions, that they would not inform someone?? If you believe it to be different, then contact the newspaper for an investigative report, or whomever it is in the government that provides regulation to zoos. You make it sound like a huge conspiracy, where all the zoo managers, the board members, the general public, the doctors, the suppliers, the regulators, and the employees, ALL see your horrific conditions, and none of them do anything about it????

Actually, zoos have government especially locally, do have it in with the zoos. There are people gathering evidence. You think they are going to inform the public who will not come if they did know the truth? And by the way, yes, these animals get better medical and dental care than you or I and it's all free with doctors and dentisit donating their time. Until you go and work at a zoo, you don't have a clue becasue you believe exactly what they want you to believe. And I was at the Director weekly meetings where keepers are told what they can and can write, what they can and can't say, who they can and can't talk to. Fucking control freaks. Did you bother to loo at the picture in my album in my profile? If you do, the take a good look at the before and after pictures of Ivan the forill's move. Severe loss of weight, mucle mass, strees, plucked hidelf bald even though the person this gorilla knew for over 25 years and knew more than anyone why this gorilla who he is. Did the zoos listen? No, and told the public everything looked and was going so well. The zoo directir also put a spin on loosing weight to "look" fit. Gorillas have 25 feet of intestines than humans and are supposed to have a pot belly. Keep talking old man. I'll keep giving example after example. You're wasting you time trying to debate me on this one. Ask anyone here.

I have fed and cared for feral cats in a colony and domesticated one who was adopted by a woman who loves cats. I'll certainly look up info on feral dogs though.

Feral Dogs and Cats
Dogs, because they are social animals, will usually find other stray dogs and form a group or pack. These dogs quickly forget their human families in the effort to survive. Rural areas are sometimes plagued by groups of feral dogs killing livestock and frightening people. These animals live in abandoned buildings, old cars, in the sewer systems - anywhere they can get shelter from the elements. Most live off garbage.

Most are just barely surviving. The average life span of a feral cat is about two years. Some of the dangers facing feral cats include traffic, other animals, heat or cold, disease, poisoning and humans who have grown impatient with the activities of these animals.

Unfortunately, thousands of dogs and cats suffer and die each year because they are left to fend for themselves.

What is the solution to this problem?

First, it is against the law to abandon an animal. If you see someone doing this, report that person immediately.

Second, if you see an animal, which appears to be homeless, bring it to the Shelter.

Finally, people who own pets should obey the animal control and protection laws, have their pets spayed or neutered and fulfill their obligation to care for and protect their pets.

These animals can't live without us.
