Lake Mead may go dry by 2021

Some very bad things could be happening in the US Southwest in the not so distant future.

Lake Mead may go dry by 2021

There is a 50 percent chance that Lake Mead, which was created by the Hoover Dam and the Colorado River, will go dry by 2021 because of escalating human demand and climate change, according to a study by Tim Barnett and David Pierce of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography of the University of California at San Diego.

Lake Mead straddles the Arizona-Nevada border, and Lake Powell is on the Arizona-Utah border. Aqueducts carry water from the system to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Diego, and other communities in the Southwest.

The old high water line is at the top of the white band. This was taken two weeks ago.

By 2017, there is a 50 percent chance that the reservoir could drop so low that Hoover Dam could no longer produce hydroelectric power. Water conservation and mitigation technologies and policies thus need to be implemented now, the study stated.

Man, we're having a hell of a war here in Alabama with Georgia over water, and we're getting less and less rainfall, so it's just going to get worse.

Someone's GOT to get this country conserving water on a massive basis and fast.

Desalination plants and pipe that water to the states which need it. That's the only long term plan that'll solve anything. We've long since outgrown all the natural and many man made fresh water sources.

Apparantly the governor of Georgia doesn't think so, he's lifting a near-total ban on garden watering and swimming-pool filling in the state and expecting that people do the right thing. Now that is wishful thinking.

Desalination plants take a huge amount of energy to run though and there is very little surplus power available.

I hadn't heard that! This shit's going to get REALLY ugly. I still don't fully understand this "agreement" we have with Georgia, but they seem to have all the power.

Irrelevant. The cost of destroying the fresh water sources is a far worse consequence. And, because nuclear power is unavoidable anyway, might as well run desalination with nuclear... or even wave generators, which makes convenient sense in the proximity.

It was only last week that a federal appeals court ruled that Atlanta couldn't get more water out of Lake Lanier.

Two days later Purdue is acting like it didn't really matter.

Short term insanity and a lack of long term planning.

Well it's not irrelevant, you aren't going to get any new nuclear plants built in the next 10 years no matter what you do and even that figure is overly hopeful. Something has to be done a lot sooner than that.

Besides the current low water levels might cause some nuclear plants in the Southeast to reduce their output which would make desalination even more difficult and expensive.
