More Water Wars

In a previous thread the struggle for water between Georgia and Alabama was brought up. Well Georgia is at it again this time with Tennessee.

Georgia Claims a Sliver of the Tennessee River

They are bringing up a land dispute going back almost 200 years (which has been revisted several times since) in an effort to redraw their northern boundry to the 35th parallel. This change would have a small portion of the Tennessee River go through the Northeast corner of Georgia giving access to its water. The Southeast has been plagued by a severe drought that has left Atlanta and surrounding areas with a water shortage.

Proposed border change

Tennesse is also suffering from the drought so water taken from them would cause more hardships there. The border change would effect part of North Carolina as well.

All the more reason to be water smart and conserve this precious commodity. The US will be turning to Canada for water soon enough...wouldn't be surprised if water gets privatized because of this. If we think things are bad now, we ain't seen nothing yet!

Georgia's a coastal state. They should get off their asses and build desalination plants. Otherwise they can go fuck themselves.

What kills me is that the governor of Georgia and company are going around saying "we can't conserve out way out of this drought". So what is their solution? Try to appropriate water from other drought strucken states. A non-solution solution if ever there was one.

He's going off the blood-from-a-turnip strategy.

Does anybody still think that preserving the union was a good idea?

Pretty much. If I was Tennessee and somehow the SCOTUS ruled in Georgia's favor (I highly doubt it) I would rebuild the Nickajack damn further upstream eliminating the watershed that would be spilling over into Georgia.

Ehh, gotta ponder that one. Too many military bases down there to let'em turn this into an international dispute.

They're in that kind of mood to make such a spiteful response.

I think I learned in about 5th grade that oil and potable water ARE NOT in infinite supply. Most of my life has been spent in the southwestern US, and for decades, AZ and CA and NV have been talking about potential water shortages. Since at least the 70's we have known how an oil crisis can raise prices and cause shortages.

So for about fifty years now, full knowing what can happen when we don't have enough water and/or oil, Americans just kept developing and developing with not a single concern for our natural resources. It's sort of like the national debt that all of us have created, where we just spend spend spend, and will pass the problems on to our kids and grand kids--great plan!!

People don't seem to have a clue, nor the interest, to understand the full impact as the oil and water supplies dry up. And the major hurt won't wait until they are dry--it has already started and will get worse every month. In my area gasoline for 87 octane is already $3.45/gal and they are predicting it will easily top $4/gal by June. This is not a lot of money, but it's enough to keep ratcheting up the hurt...

People don't care about the future because they think it doesn't impact them directly in the foreseeable future - they just focus on the here and now. As long as our lawns are nice and green, free of weeds that's all that matters.
