QUOTE=Refuge51;161454 In regard to undeveloped countries, when faced with starvation, there is also a lack of fresh water, there's dysentery and there's fatigue. I imagine when one looks across a dusty horizon you couldn't penetrate with a pickaxe, you would give up hope. What could possibly flourish in a horrible place such as that? These people need wells, shade trees, and irrigation along with top soil. Even if they couldn't plant wheat, they would then be able to plant vegetables, fruit trees and watermelon. Watermelon comes from the dry arid areas anyway and could take the place of water when necessary.
The comments below in quotes I made from another thread about water distribution and/or availability:

Quote:
I can't help but think about Percival Lowell's initial observations of Mars in the 1890's; "...the bright areas were deserts and the dark areas were patches of vegetation, and water from the melting polar cap flowed down the canals toward the equatorial regions to revive the vegetation, and the canals were constructed by intelligent beings who once flourished...".
As the US might be affected by global warming, and/or the availability of more water in dryer areas, it seems perfectly logical that at some point, that the USA and other nations, will require man-made canals to distribute water. Whether the water comes from deep wells, or reservoirs holding rain and snow melt, or from desalinization of the oceans, it must be distributed hundreds and thousands of miles. Such projects will cost billion$ or trillion$, but these costs can be shared by private enterprise and from taxation, and they would provide tens of thousands of jobs for decades to come. Further, by having available water in remote areas, this will tend to even out the population masses that exist today.

Percival Lowell's observations of Mars turned out not to be accurate. But a few centuries from now, some young astronomer on Mars might be observing Earth and commenting that; the canals were constructed by intelligent beings who once flourished...

Amazing quote! Hope and help is on the horizon then although much too far into the future.

It's confusing because I can't find the quote here. I know you and BC don't get along, but it'll be okay..it really will

Most of our jobs are gone. Lots of our own people are running out of money, to keep themselves and those they love, alive and living a decent life.
Hard to spot those rising food costs in most people's budget, what with that new Razor Phone they're looking to buy. Kids need new $120 Nike's and that new Maverick's $200 Jersey.

It seems to me that it's past time for a philosophical discussion about the government/private enterprise/mankind relationship.

I can't imagine that the social security issue will be resolved by private enterprise??

I can't imagine that the health care crisis and the need for UHC will be resolved by private enterprise??

I can't imagine that the education crisis will be resolved by private enterprise??

I can't imagine that all the work necessary to repair and replace the crumbling infrastructure will be resolved by private enterprise??

So...if in these areas which have become critical today, if private enterprise CANNOT be the answer, then what is? The four items I mention above are facts...not some crazy political rhetoric. Global climate changes might cause severe water shortages. We know they are real and we know something needs to be done immediately. But why do we always wait?

I think we procrastinate because it's not clear who has ownership of the issues?? Is it the government...private enterprise...or people who must resolve these issues? Someone will say all of them have responsibility, but I say someone needs to take the lead, and all of them must come up with trillion$.

Socialism is a political term that many relate to horrible governments. But with the items mentioned above, along with their cost and scope, who else but the government can manage such programs?

In another post I mention that in the fictional Star Trek series that people never worry about money, health care, housing, etc. Yes it's fiction, but is this the direction that we must travel?
