The true answer to this depends on if mercury or CO2 emissions are more detrimental to our environment.

If CFL's last much longer than incandescents and they require less current, then there will be a tremendous savings in greenhouse gases due to producing less CO2 type electricity.

If a credible CFL recycling program is in place, then it's hard to justify incandescents over CFL's.

LED technology is catching on but the efficiency, the brightness, and the cost are not yet viable as a replacement for incandescents or CFL's...some day but not today.
