Didn't even know about that..........

I know many of the farmers do that............

You ever go out into the delta??

You can go right down Franklin blvd about 15 miles & on the right there is a gate to an island.......... It is now really a huge bowl w/ the center sunk to about 20 feet below sea level.. We pay millions of dollars to maintain the levee's (poorly I might add) so that the one or two families can grow subsidized corn & some tomatoes....

In some states when a person buys a property, they own everything above the ground and everything below the ground...while others only own above the ground. I also believe in some instances above and below the ground are kept together when others allow them to be separated. Hence it's always good to check when buying to make sure someone else does not own everything below you.

Why does a City or farmer or anyone sell anything...for the money...

We could harvest more water if people utilized rain-water. We have all these drains on our roofs. The water goes right in, forming little rivers. Why not direct the rivers into a water-well, to be used for drinking/bathing/whatever?

I believe that they do similar stuff in areas where that is feasible...not a whole lot of rain in the desert...but in other areas like MI it would be pointless....

I guess that will work for some as long as you don't live in Bolivia.......

This is a great idea that everyone should consider.

But one answer why we don't do this probably comes down to cost. And I'm only guessing here, but it's not inexpensive to install a holding tank in a home. First, since it does not rain often, the tank must be fairly large...like 1000-2000 gallons maybe. This tank probably needs to go underground, and it needs a pump, and a by-pass if it's full, etc. So when you add up these costs...let's guess it might be $5000 for materials and labor. My opinion is that the cost of water is much to cheap today which is why we are so wasteful. So as long as it remains cheap, most people will never recoup their $5000 investment so it does not make sense. Now if the home is not linked to city water, then these types of ideas are necessary no matter the cost.

Water is too cheap...

Logically we should be planting more trees and bushes so I'm not a fan of no landscaping. But there can be more common sense in 'what' is planted and where. Trees need some water to get going but do fine on their own afterwards. There are draught-tolerant plants for those areas with little water. Cities who don't pay attention to the growth characteristics of plants, and where they are running the water sprinklers every single day, this is just stupid.

One only needs to spend a few minutes with nature to understand all that we can have without needing an irrigation system...

I saw a show on one of the Discovery (science?) shows where they 'green' up various things.

They showed a house that was completely off the grid. It had an underground cistern that collected and purified/filtered rainwater and left the house with all the usable water it needed. Not all that expensive in the long term.

We've also, on one of these threads, had discussion about skyscrapers ability to use captured rainwater as a powersource via the use of turbines.

LOL...............

Most native species are considered weeds.. Just like the native inhabitants were...........

They came here & changed the land to reflect their image (or the imagined one that sells) of themselves..........

Green manicured lawns & well trimmed hedges & the like more reminiscent of England & the wannabies up there in the north east than here........
