Except she in fact asked for heightened security, so Musharraf's claim that she turned him down is BS.

Benazir Bhutto died Thursday after a suicide bombing at a political rally in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Pakistan People's Party information secretary Sherry Rehman, who was riding in the car behind Bhutto's when it was attacked, called the government's conclusion that Bhutto was not shot "the most bizarre, dangerous nonsense." "It's beginning to look like a cover up to me," Rehman said in a CNN interview. Rehman said Bhutto was hemorrhaging on the way to the hospital and that the two cars used to get her there were blood-soaked. "There were clear bullet injuries to her head," said Rehman. "When we bathed her we saw that." http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/asiapc...ath/index.html |

I think she even issued a statement not to long ago, that if anything happened to her, she said Musharraf would be to blame.

the other thing I would point out is that.... in traumatic head injuries...it is no always apparent what the wound is from. I have seen puncture wounds....wounds from blunt objects, that at first seem like bullet holes.

See, the reason they need to lie about the cause of death is simple. The usual profile of an al-Qaeda suicide bomber is to just blow up. To smuggle a suicide bomb vest [or whatever other version thereof] means they have to forego a firearm, since that's a security response magnet. But this assassin was first tasks with killing Bhutto in such a way as to be readily apparent she was dead. And, either he killed himself or- not knowing he was wired, his handler pulled the plug on him with a remote detonator.

Musharraf never wanted to take part in Bhutto's power sharing idea. While her past wth corruption is still an issue with some legitimacy, that's entirely different from an outright tyrant. A corrupt politicians can be voted out [assuming...] but a tyrant has to be dragged out, physically- often at gunpoint. Musharraf might not have issued an order to kill, but he also didn't have to. All he had to do was pull back the security and let other people do his dirty work for him. Yes, there are extremists linked to the I.S.I. [Pakistan's intelligence service, and of course Musharraf depends on extremists to shore up his power even if he doesn't like it [Musharraf hates extremism in religion, rather like Saddam Hussein] but he needs his deal with the devil. And that means when they say lay off the Taliban and al-Qaeda he has to in order to get something in return and even just to keep the assassination attempts on himself down to a minimum.

A little late to the conversation. My take is that President Musharaff had her removed. She posed a threat to his hold on power. The weakling that will try to replace her in the next election, if there is one, does not. And of course we need to blame al Qaeda/terrorists because the asshole Musharraff is the best we got now, and I suppose we have to keep up some appearances that we are not allied with a complete thug.
Its not so far fetched. Promise the suicde attacker that you will pay his family a sum of money after he goes to heaven and this kind of action can be arranged. Im pretty sure Musharraff can come up with some loose change to make it happen. |
