I would have....had I known it was illegal in california at the time. I didn't findout untill two weeks later.

My partner always makes me take my ID to the polls. So I had it and was only upset that they didn't ask for my partners ID.

do you know what it costs to get an official copy of your birth certificate (in order to get the "free" state id) ? figured for inflation its more than the poll taxes the south used to use to prevent blacks from voting 100 years ago. that's progress for you.

It's an attack on Latinos not Black voters. Supposedly they think illegal immigrants are voting [never mind there's no proven trend of non-citizens sneaking into polling stations].

It always bothered me that someone could just follow another person up to the table, look over the shoulder of the person in front of them and just randomly pick a name off the list.

But in all fairness, if a state does mandate identification then the state should also enact a voter registration law that automatically registers everybody when they get a drivers license or other form of govt ID.
It would behoove the gov't that if they require an ID to vote that they provide an acceptable ID when a person registers to vote. Here in my part of NY, our signatures are compared, very old school. It's been so long but I am sure I showed ID at some point?

Actually I've never seen anyone ask for ID in Utah either, but then again most of us are white. I'm sure they likely do it to minorities, but with such a stranglehold by the extreme right wing they don't even try voter disenfranchisement.

Yeah, that was sort of what I suspected as the rationale. Just because there are no reports of it doesn't mean it hasn't happened. I doubt it matters, its just a bunch of fear mongering.

I do think though, that we should have to show ID, there are lots of reasons. I remember in 2000, there were accusations of people voting 2 or more times.

It's sole purpose is to prevent the poor from voting. And the poor and homeless rarely vote for the people who made them that way.

The idea might sound good on the surface, but it's the assholes who back it that make me think twice about this. I think the greater threat to a fair election is the cozy relationship Diebold Inc. has with the Republicans, specifically the Bush administration.

HOW?!?!

People cannot function in todays society without a photo ID, you can't a job without a photo ID. Are you talking about schizophrenics that live on the street? I don't really think they are registered lol.

So far no one has answer this, they just keep repeating the same talking-point I hear all the time. I don't see how requiring a person to identify themselves is fascist or disenfranchisement. It could be benifical because it would encourage people to get a state ID.

You might want to consider the broader implications of this. Most states have an unenforceable law that requires every person to carry a state ID of some type in public, but the local authorities have too much else to worry about to bother with it. Is this SCOTUS decision another step towards a national ID? A scary concept that's been kicked around for years and even one that I'd venture to guess the GOP's embattled libertarian wing would vehemently oppose.
