Ptech is going down hill
Under Jeb Bush the Cubans were very influential. And, other certain administrations prior to his.

But they are always influential on the national level, and that's how the special exception for Cuban immigrants was written into the law.

Certain Cubans were drafted by CIA back in the day, and the relationship has survived and grown ever since.

Look at the travesty that is Luis Posada Carilles.

I say the exemption rule Cubans get should be moved over to Haitians. Then, if we feel like it, we'll put the Cuban refugees behind the Haitians in line.

old news.
They were influential under Jeb Bush?
not really - he pandered to them - a sure well of votes.
But they have no real influence anymore than any other Hispanic group down here.
They used to be a big deal, but the huge influx of other Carribean nationals has made them just another group.

Along with Florida, northern New Jersey, particularly Union City is home to a major Cuban American population dating back to the first wave of refugees from the early 1960s. Robert "the Torch" Torricelli, a Congressman and later a one term Senator who supported Helms Burton and any other punative measures against Castro's Cuba was himself forced not to seek reelection for a second term in the US Senate because of his ties to a Jersey City businessman imprisoned for illegal dealings with North Korea, so much for anti-Communist rhetoric about the embargo. It's an outdated policy of the Cold War and the flat Earth world economy renders it completely obsolete. Let's make it an issue in this campaign, all of us non-Cuban Americans should insist that it be chucked straight into Jesse Helms' fucking grave. Given our enormous trade deficit with China, the human rights argument put forth by many Conservatives and their Cuban American allies makes the continuation of the embargo completely hypocritical.
