It's a total crock, if you ask me. My brother-in-law is a CA peace officer. He barely got his GED, served 4 yrs in the military and then worked as a laborer for many years. He had a neighbor who worked at a prison, so he decided to apply. He did the training (weeks, not years). Currently, he makes over $100K per year.

It really does tick me off that his job is "worth more" than mine.

What do we really value as a society? Keeping people behind bars or educating them?

You can see clearly the priorities based on the disparity of pay between the two professions. Teachers require more education but get far less. That and building or running prisons has become a for-profit industry and further erodes the justice system [such as it is].

A cyclic system:
  • Treat someone bad, unjustly punish them.
  • They remember and spread the word.
  • Another hears the story and they have similar experiences.
  • Reinforced anger builds.
  • Put this population in cages, treat them like animals.
  • They become animals.
  • Release the animals.
  • They see opportunities that are not restricted by the "law" and take them.
  • Reinforces the fear as the victim count builds.
  • Drones that see one side, then abuse their power with impunity.
  • The industry profits.
  • The sheep are harvested.
The symptoms are treated but the cure is avoided. We are spreading our philosophy overseas. It is Profitable...

California prisons are state run. They are not a "For Profit" organization. In fact the real critisizm of the department is unrelated to the current problems of the union which are two seperate entities....which is.......they spend too much.

Sure, blame the second best paid Peace Officers in the state for having to detain, everyday, some of Americas worst offenders.....and do it with far more regard for inmates than any other state prison system.

If teachers want hazard pay....ask your union.....but I wouldn't ask this Governor, he's gutting the school systems out here.

What? You want to require a college degree to be a Correctional Peace officer? They just raised the test score level to pass and pissed off a whole lot of people. A requirement of that type would get very few applicants. What? People with just a High School education don't deserve jobs that pay over $100,000.00 a year?

For such a great education......you don't sound so smart.

Society tried stoning people to death.....but that seemed a bit harsh, so we have prisons. If society cared more about people to begin with there wouldn't be so much desperation, but the Prison System does not create it. It protects society from those that choose that path. Many inmates are there for reasons which society has refused to budge from whatever archaic ideas it has. 3 strikes laws and drug possession charges clog the system but people just bash the keepers and not those that create the laws that fill up these prisons.

I don't know a single officer that fits that discription or mistreats inmates. Jeff is always respectful of each individual as is my brother and brother inlaw and nieces husband. Teachers do not have to face the reality of rushing to remove an inmate who has just killed your buddy. Proper protection costs money. The scenario is real and just happened in a federal prison. Officers did not have stab vests and it costs that officer his life. Now they get vests. That is a cost the state of California has been paying for years now along with other costly improvements for safety. Lets see a teacher lug a nearly 15 pound belt with accesories along with the vest the unform, stay all together everyday....and , oh yeah, did I mention climb stairs all day with no air conditioning.

Please....many teachers actualy can contribute to the criminal population with ill treatment of students or prefered treatment of a select group.....maybe they should make less for that

Examine prison building contracts and how much pandering goes to the prison guard union. It's a for profit industry without exception.

Actually many criticism do in fact deal with the prison guards themselves being abusive and dehumanizing.

I'm not convinced he's the whole problem. He's facing recall because he wouldn't kiss the prison industry's ass. Pure and simple.

That is absurd.

Not for nothing, but IMO the reason CA is in such financial straights is because the people have voted on way too many Constitutional Amendments that mandate that funding for certain budgets is calculated by percentages of tax revenue. Its gotten so that they really should just do the budget on a spreadsheet.

So now, when the budget should be slashed across the board because the revenue just isn't there right now, the items that are not fully protected by the constitution (like education and nurses) are the only places that can legally be cut.
