Mark: "but people just bash the keepers and not those that create the laws that fill up these prisons."

But it's ok to bash me, right?

Mark: "I don't know a single officer that fits that discription or mistreats inmates."

I don't know a single teacher who marginalizes ANY student or mistreats any student!!

Mark: "Please....many teachers actualy can contribute to the criminal population with ill treatment of students or prefered treatment of a select group.....maybe they should make less for that"

Oh, yes. Go down to your local Jr High and tell this to some hardworking teachers while they're on their lunch break. I'm sure THAT will go over well. Perhaps you could find a really bad part of a major city and find another school and inform those teachers that they are giving certain students preferred treatment.

You could run for your local SCHOOL BOARD!! That's it! Go, MARK!!

Mark: "Sorry....but teachers ARE the problem. They turn out thugs everyday. If they want more pay.....they should start educating the children of this country or.....there's always the Prison system. They are looking for people all the time. I hear it pays well also."

I'll get right on that. I'll tear up my fancy degree on the way to the 6 week prison guard training course!

(Who knew? I'm an ELITIST!!)

Teachers do not turn out thugs. You're being irrational.

About 85 percent of inmates are substance abusers. Should teachers be blamed for that as well? Oh, wait, maybe that's the fault of their pediatrician!!

Notice the absence of a certain word... parents????

Some who teach are bad apples, but by and large teachers do a great job. It's the system that needs to be changed.

I commented that guards don't need degrees of any sort. Show me where I said, "They need to have degrees." There is a huge disparity between the level of training that is required and there is no denying that!!

I simply stated that they are NOT highly trained for the money they make.

The two professions are apples and oranges, but the fact that society values "locking them up" rather than educating them is beyond me.

I clearly stated this in an earlier post.
Not all teachers are right for the job. Some do as much harm as possible while others simply look to the white students to teach. Many of these issues can be sen in Correctional officers as well, however it was you that brought up the difference in pay between the two......not me. You did say it was a "crock".

If you feel that i am bashing you.....don't enter the debate. I have not been cruel, unkind or uncivil to you, nor had i thought that you had done so to me.

The world needs both teachers and correctional officers.....I only know that both here in California have had the Federal government step in to make directions they determined to be neccesary. Both.

Let's face it. no one is perfect and many people will be critical of both industries.

This was--at the VERY least--an unkind statement. Snide, if you ask me.

This is not fact based.

I still think the pay disparity is a crock. That's what I meant, not that they were worthless. Even my dumb brother-in-law is worth something. :/

It's a total crock, if you ask me. My brother-in-law is a CA peace officer. He barely got his GED, served 4 yrs in the military and then worked as a laborer for many years. He had a neighbor who worked at a prison, so he decided to apply. He did the training (weeks, not years). Currently, he makes over $100K per year.

It really does tick me off that his job is "worth more" than mine.

What do we really value as a society? Keeping people behind bars or educating them?
OK....I have been gone from home for nearly three months....so tonight while Jeff is on the phone I her him say..." We require a college degree now. At least an AA to be accepted in the California Department of Corrections..." and I say "WHAT!"

He looks at me and says...you knew that! I told when we started that last May!

"DoooH!"

The value of both proffesions is equal? Maybe not still....after all, teachers may have a HIGHER value.....if not equal pay. But even that can change. Why not? Everything else does!
