TWENTY-NINE PALMS, Calif. -- Marine Lance Cpl. Daniel J. Vela has been training in the desert of California for his next military adventure.

Vela, 22, a Central High School and Flint Schools of Choice graduate, was honored locally for his part in foiling an attack on a military post in Karma, Iraq, on Aug. 4 while he was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines.

Vela and another Marine were standing guard when the base was attacked with mortars and small arms fire. They opened fire on two trucks trying to enter the post.
The attack was meant to distract Marines from a suicide bombing attempt. The Marines fired at the first truck, detonating its explosives. Vela and the other Marine were thrown by the blast; Vela hit a wall, knocking him out and giving him a concussion.

Vela said he continues to receive treatment for headaches and memory loss from the injury.

In September, after his return from a seven-month deployment to Iraq, Vela was honored by Buick UAW Local 599. He received a standing ovation from 300 union members and gifts from the union.

A possible new deployment to Afghanistan may be in the works, said Vela, who has 18 months left on his enlistment.

Well, I wouldn't quite take it that far. But I would say that the military ought to let us wear whatever kind of armor we feel we are most effective in, and if that ends up causing us death or dismemberment, they could just say "told ya so" and still at least pay our spouses our death benifiet we deserve.

Unfortunately, I would take it that far. And they should offer the best equipment available, we all pay for it, eventually. Some a lot more than others. And if you are a veteran, you are about to find out how shitty this administration treats its vets. I wish they didn't, the argument can be made to screw Medicaid and welfare and every other group of recipients, but not vets. and their practice of it is a shame to them and our nation.

Both sides are using our troops for their own political ends. It's a shame, because they're fighting and dying to protect ALL OF US. When are you lunk heads going to understand that?

At twenty nine seconds it almost sounded like he had a Fruedian slip and said General Betrayus. Maybe it's just me.

Funny how he became "General Betrayus" when he didn't attack the President.

The government works for you and me.

Want to honor a soldier? ....then question, with great anal scrutiny, the decisions made by your employees which put our brave military in harms way.

I'm sure you would never attack a president no matter political affiliation.
