Today Jon Stewart [and no one else] reported on a congressional hearing to crack down on an virtual world website allowing users to create their own avatars because...

wait for it,

Al-Qaeda might use these websites and avatar generating software to scout around virtual world conferences and hangouts for new recruits. And the expert witness testifying before congress has her own avatar and username of Galacticacookie- as if the committee members cares [which they apparently did].

Gawd! No wonder al-Qaeda's still going on strong. Our congress is worried about a terrorist attack via World of Warcraft!

I am confused....are they cracking down on a particular site because of specific avatars....or all sites that allow personal avatars?

From what I can gather it was a particular website but that they implied the virtual world avatar thing was something to watch for in the future.

It's called getting their foot in the door. And the 'terrorist boogieman' is a tried and true way to restrict the dissemination of free ideas and exchange.

These avatar websites are for geeks to hang out. There's no exchange of ideas that'll do much good for anyone. Although, those going there will contribute less to the genepool, so maybe we dodge a bullet there.

No, I think they meant the foot in the door to internet regulation. I may be mistaken, but that's how I read it.
