Some women have it rough and others have it hard. What doctors don't tell you is it actually can start in your mid 30's and progresses slowly until, the big hot flash of flashes. I prefer to call the "Sun Flares". My mom was lucky, she was done at age 40. I'm 45 and still waiting for that gene of her's to kick in!

Now that's depressing! So when you say it can start - exactly what [symptoms] can start?

Yeah, I had some of that during that month after I lost that ovary, and I'm so cold natured that it was just bizzare, walking around just in a sweat, miserable, feeling like your melting from the inside out. That alone will make you cranky as hell.

There's a high price for being able to produce life in your womb.

the women in my family go through this in their late 20's - early 30's.
and unfortunately, years ago, doctors wouldn't believe you if you presented symptoms at that age. i was probably the first one to get any treatment at all. my grandmother almost died on the kitchen floor in a pool of blood @ 32, my mom had her last period @ 33. the onset was different for me - my periods, which had been very long and heavy up till then, just suddenly got lighter and lighter till i practically didn't have one.

i had one ovary removed when i was 29, and six months later a complete hysterectomy. all the hormone replacements they tried for me just made ALL my symptoms MUCH MUCH worse and i finally quit taking them out of desperation and a sense of self-preservation.

i'm 54 now, and still waiting for the hot flashes to stop, although they have diminished quite a bit. this is why i could NEVER live in a warm climate again - as i've become extremely sensitized to heat. to me, being cold feels wonderful - and that's probably why alaska seemed like heaven to me.

men have absolutely NO idea what this is like - and it would be neat if there were some kind of "beer goggles" method of giving them a taste of what we go through for a week. i suspect their respect and sensitivity for women would be greatly increased, if there were.

Right on! Carol Burnett said if you want to know what having a baby feels like, take your bottom lip and pull it over your head.

All of the drug industry and medical community worked tirelessly so men could be assured of getting a hard on into the 90s, and women are left to suffer through this misery with some bogus hormone replacement that as it turns out, gives us cancer.

What a world.

well, it's a man's world!
it's why we get paid less to do the same job.
(...and that's also why most EVERYTHING else is so fucked up, too!)
you can bet that if THEY suffered from this,
it would have been cured LONG ago!

in retrospect, with hormones now shown to be causing breast cancer, etc, i'm VERY glad i quit taking them within the first year. they were making my hot flashes 100% worse, and my bone density tests always come back fine, anyway.

You get bitchy, hot, but not really flashes, mainly all of the symptoms just at a lower dose. All that is happening is your estrogen is slowly decreasing. Somethimes it's not noticed, but it's happening. Men have a menapause as well. Just not as severe as women.

I know what you mean. I kept telling my docs I thought I was starting to go through the change and they laughed basically. I'm too young they said. I think evolution has something to do with it. Women are going through the change at a much earlier age. Doctors don't seem to get it. i refuse to see a male doctor. What pissed me off was when I had my hysterectomy I told them I wanted everything out especially the overies. Cancer in my family. The GYN said ok, then without my permission my endocrinologist called the GYN and told him to leave my overies in! So I still have them and the risk of the genetic ovarian cancer. And they have the nerve to tell me I don't need a pap every year! Are they nuts?

My doctor told me to try Estroven, it's a natural supplement. I'm not quite into that stage yet, but have my moments being in early 40s. I started take 2 a day, not sure if it's doing anything or not but I didn't get a migraine this month!
